Decisions, decisions. Put Android on HD2 or try the Evo 3d?

Well here is how it stands for me at the moment. I really want a phone that does everything again and currently my HD2 does most things but one of the things it doesn't do is give me access to Sonos and a couple of other apps like Splashtop, etc.

I have never tried putting Android on it so really have now idea how good it is or how limited it is. I have just seen that the price of the Evo 3d has dropped even further to £229 and am very tempted to give it a whirl.

I am really interested to see if Apple bring out an iPhone 5 this year but want something to fill in the time between. So my question is: how good is Android on the HD2 or should I just call it a day on my once lovely phone and try the Evo which is a little bit bigger :/

I had android on my HD2 for the last 6 months of my contract and it ran everything I threw at it. I only "upgraded" to a SG2 because T-Mobile gave me a stupidly good deal :)

Well for the sake of giving my phone a new lease of life I would love to give it a go. Mind me asking which Android build and rom you were using? Is there an idiots guide? Do I go NAND or just off the SD card? Thanks for the reply :)

I used an HD2 with a nand android ROM daily for about 6 months also and it was brilliant. Like a totally new phone. Can't remember what ROM it was but im sure there are even better ones now.

Exactly the same here, I actually now regret selling it on when I got my S2.

Just pick one of the most popular roms and follow the guides on xda, you won't regret it! :)

OK I have done something rash and typically lazy. I have ordered an Evo 3D. However, I now have nothing to lose by trying to put Android on my HD2 and plan to do this tomorrow before it is delivered on Monday. That way, if it rocks I can just send the Evo back unopened.

I have trawled the XDA forums and find it a complete overload of data. If someone could point me in the direction of a fast, stable and fully working rom (I quite like Sense UI, MIUI looks a bit simplistic for my tastes), I would be really grateful. I plan to do the NAND flash route and have downloaded the HSPL4 pack but I gather I need to select 2.08 when I put HSPL on yeah? (mine is an older version of HSPL as I have the WM Elegancia rom on it). I have downloaded DFT_LEO_MAGLDR113_DAF which I believe is the right MAGDLR to use but I can't seem to get my hands on the recommended radio which is quoted as 2.15.50.14. I clicked the link in the OP of the thread to a multiupload account but the link is broken.

I also have a few questions about the process and if someone could help point me in the direction of a true idiot's guide I would be really grateful. Re. the questions:

1. Can I put an updated version of HSPL over the top of the old one?
2. I keep reading about a battery problem with this MAGDLR thing and people having to chop up USB leads to get the battery to get enough charge to boot up. So it won't charge if phone is switched off?
3. If this is the case with MAGDLR, is there an idiot's guide to what not to do once you have a working version of Android on your HD2?

I am quite sure I have missed loads and I know the search feature is my friend but I am just frazzled trying to sift through updated information that matches new ROMS, versions of HSPL, versions of MAGDLR, etc and would really, really appreciate some support.

Huge thanks in advance if someone is willing to help. :)

I had hoped you'd decided to stick with your old phone. I have the htc desire, and was tempted by the evo 3d as my phone is starting to show its age badly! Want the iphone 5 or sgs3 myself and can't decide whether to keep the desire, or get the evo 3d as a stop gap!

Let me know how you get on with it when it arrives? :)

Thanks

Well I may still stick with the HD2 if I can get Android up and running on it. But if I brick it or it turns out to be slower than I hoped then I will keep the Evo. I am interested in an iPhone 5 too if the rumours about a 4" screen and shaped back turn out to be true. But they are just that, rumours so for now just want a stop gap too.

Would you go for the evo 3d if in my position? Sorry to hijack a little but keen for your opinion as you are possibly doing what I'm considering :)

THE EVO 3d will be a fairly big step up from a Desire. If cost is not an issue go for it.

I used this very recently, worked a charm :)

It's not Sense, but tbh I don't like the Sense UI (or at least, the WM6.x version, I haven't used Android Sense) anyhow :)

Been running ICS on my HD2 for about a month now and its bloody superb and not missed a beat.

The only thing that doesn't work is VPN but who uses that anyway? :D

Been running a clean NAND Gingerbread build on my HD2 for months and am looking forward to putting ICS on it when I get home.

The HD2 hardware is more than up to it. Not quite good enough for the latest latest 3D gaming titles but I have no desire for that kind of stuff anyway.
