I want to upgrade my graphics card but ive idea which one to get as there are so many of them. currently i have an ATI card on my AGP port, and whilst i need to may upgrade the mother board to a PCI express one i havent made that purchase yet

however i need someone to recommend me a decent graphics card that will allow me to run games such as farcry, doom 3, fear etc at decent resolutions and decent frame rate, both for a AGP card and a PCI express card

I have a 3.4Gh P4 with 2Gb Ram running XP SP2 the card is a 6800GT

thanks

EDIT; i am using a 19" monitor at 1280x1024 although games are being run at 1024x768, things like doom 3 and act of war slow right down when there is lots going on, i cant remember my current card name, ill edit the post later with that

How about a geforce FX5200?

Or even better, why not just look at some of the other countless threads asking the same question and decide for yourself?

Im sorry but this same thread comes up about twice a day now, dont be lazy, do some research, you only have to click on a few buttons.

Bit harsh Lanz, if you can't be arsed to reply then don't.

There are few options availbale in AGP now so if poss, upgrade to PCI-E. You'll then have much more choice and the cards are relatively much cheaper than their AGP equivalents. Choice of card depends on the res you want to play at and how much you want to pay. Bit more info required really.

I know there are tons of people asking the same questions, but those questions are pertinent to that individual they maybe something better out there, different opinions etc. this is a forum for people to help other people regardless of if there are other threads out there with the same or a similar question, i was not being rude,, i was not being offensive, if it upsets you that people post the same question as someone else, then dont respond.

Thanks for the help, my display is a 19" CRT running at 1280x1024 not sure if i woul dneed a beast of a card to run at that, but at the moment i am running at 1024x768 with everything set to high (this is playing act of war and/or Doom) and when there is a lot going on on screen it all gets jerky, i may need to look at the PCI-E, but i only upgraded about a year ago boo hoo

Go PCi-E , and 7600GT is best mid card , X1900XTX & 7900GTX best top cards.
Cheers Wellibob, thanks for that info, i will make a note, i think i may upgrade to PCI-E when i can afford it

A few things that are required when posting are:

Budget
Resloutions you game at.
Are you willing to upgarde mobo to pci-e.

The main one being budget as with out this info no one can help you.

But you would probably get a better and quicker answer to your question from looking at established threads where countless people already have given their advice, than starting a new one and waiting for people to respond again, offering the same advice. Chances are, you never really needed to start this thread, you could have read a few others and pressed that `Buy` button already, as the information you seek is already on these forums.

So its a AGP card you are now after?
If buying a top end AGP card its cheaper to get a new mobo and pci-e card than say a 7800 on agp and have quicker performance.

budget?

By the time it took you to type this post you could have provided info on what card to get. ;)

There are many threads around on similar topics. Its inevitable in a gfx card forum. The search facility is there but sometimes its better just to start another form your own angle. :)

point made chaps, i suppose budget will be around £300 but if its better to go for a PCI-E then i may have to wait a while and get some more cash

You could get a pci-e mobo that supports your p4 and a 7900GT or x1800xt for less than that!

Why would you need to wait?

Agreed, dont wait, get the best you can afford(within reason), and run it. Live in the moment, and then 6 - 9 months down the line, look to sell and upgrade again.
