With all the talk of the next generation GPU's around the corner and the introduction of SB-E and with the recent flooding that has obviously pushed the prices of HDD's up, I'm wondering if 2012 is the time to buy (early to mid).

Basically, I am running a 6 year old rig that comprises a Core 2 Duo E6700 and Foxconn P9657AA mobo. GPU is Leadtek Winfast P8800 GTX.

So, you can see that I have an ancient rig in terms of what's available today. Don't get me wrong, its a good PC and has served me well but I feel it's time to move on now and an upgrade is more of a necessity in my mind not the "itch" as we call it.

So, I would be grateful for some advice as I do not know when the new graphics setups are out and when would be in terms of price drops etc, the best time to make a move.

I am contemplating of going down the route of SB with an i5-2500k (heard at the moment it's one of the best CPU's available), Z68 chipset (MSI GD-65) and obviously to boost performance an SSD (most likely Crucial M4 64 or 128 Gb).

I'm a keen gamer so a good GPU is a must. Yes you may say that there is no "ideal" time to buy but I am interested in getting opinions anyway as I am absolutely going to upgrade and use OC UK to get my stuff.

Question is when :)

New high end AMD cards expected mid Jan.

Prices drops?? Ha, not very likely. We'll more than likely just see the odd clearance deal or today only deals but not for quite a while I think.

Could get the guts of the system now, throw in your 8800GTX as a tempory measure until new cards arrive? Give you a chance to build it and get stuck into the new hardware over Xmas?

You don't think there will be any price drops then?

If new AMD cards are out mid Jan then surely Nvidia will be joining them. I was thinking of going down Nvidia route anyway so hopefully (again, not sure at all) the new releases will encourage clearences or price drops on current hardware.

I am a regular visitor of here anyhow and I always have a look at deals etc.

In terms of a current GPU for example a 3GB GTX 580 is a cracking card but a bit too pricey for my liking. Definetly want to go down SB route and I have seen that the I5-2500k has actually gone up a bit in price.

It's very frustrating. But, I am a patient man and I will wait if need be.

NVIDIA cards are expected a bit later but not sure when exactly. There are very rarely wholesale price drops even when new cards are released, stock seems to disappear very quickly of older cards esp when they're on daily / weeks special offers.
