Hi all.

My rig is in my signature however some alterations have happened. Firstly, one of my 280's artifacted, so that's dead. Secondly, the other 280 runs too hot to even play Blu-Ray's -_- Unfortunately this has left my rig as just a web-browser and useless for any sort of gaming. Furthermore, the over-clock I had applied is no longer stable, so some alterations will have to be made to either the cooling setup or my over clocking config will simply have to be scaled back.
Furthermore, I can't game at-all seriously due to the lack of any decent peripherals. My keyboard is an old mac one after I spilled coffee on mine and my mouse met an unfortunate end, so I'm back to the most bog-standard, 100dpi brick I had in my closet. I also have no headset. Most importantly however, my rig currently has 3Gb of ram which is pitiful and in major need of rectifying.

So, here are the changes I plan.

1 x AMD 6970
1 x 6Gb triple channel DDR3 kit
1 x Gaming-quality headset
1 x Basic keyboard (I'm into simplicity when it comes to keyboards)
1 x Gaming Mouse (preferably Logitech as I like their ergonomic design, as opposed to something like Razer)

All-in all I can get these items for around £390 at last check...

My question is I suppose, are these changes worthwhile? What sort of performance boost can I expect over the single GPU (280) setup with 3Gb Ram I have at the moment? Are the latest games at the moment likely to run on this sort of setup? Any alternatives I've overlooked? My maximum budget is £500 for the changes. I did consider dropping the peripherals for a later date and just going all out for a 680 and some dirt-cheap Ram... thoughts? Will appreciate any and all advice and suggestions with this matter. Thanks for your time

Hi there,

Firstly GPUs, a 6970 will be a very nice upgrade from a 280 as this comparison shows. However, I'd suggest a 7850 over that, which are a similar price , they perform similarly and as you can see at the end of that comparison the 7850 uses less power.

I'd suggest at least 6GB for gaming, 3GB would hold you back with the latest games. At 1080p a 7850 should run the latest games well. They overclock well too, see here.

Also, do you run Windows XP? I'd suggest getting Windows 7 :)
