Soooo.
If I get this new job I'd be looking to upgrade the CPU below. SB or IB ? The case is a Fractal R3 so ventilation is medium. I'd be looking to reach a decent OC as the 7970 seems to love as much Hz as I can throw at it.
Recommendations on MB and RAM would also be welcome.

If you want to upgrade for gaming purposes then something along these lines will be excellent.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £189.95
1 x Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard with FREE BOOGIE BUG XXL GAMING MOUSE MAT £129.98
1 x Samsung Green (MV-3V4G3D/US) 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz 30nm Dual Channel Kit £59.99
Total : £391.32 (includes shipping : £9.50).

I have the same stuff and it is great, if a little pricey. However I doubt you will see much of an increase in real word gaming terms between your current i7 (if it is overclocked) and a newer i5. Unless it is causing a major bottleneck with your graphics card and limiting its performance.

Yes, it's Oc'd to 3.8. The 7970 is also running at 1100/1500. I notice FPS drops sometimes and some tearing. Not sure about the Gigabyte mobo. I've heard a great deal about the boot loop issues.

I had some issues with my motherboard when i first got it but the latest bios seem to have cured them. At what points are you getting theses frame rate drops are they just random or do they happen when there is a lot of stuff going on?

I get a similar thing with my 680. When lots is going on, and i'm in the middle of it, it can't keep up a high frame rate. Do you have V sync turned on?

The fps drop is because your coming into ai or other players not just the map which is stored on your local hdd, so no matter wat your fps is going to drop because of the connection from the server telling you where the other players are or your pc generating the ai. As for the tearing haven't a clue

Hyperthreading is always good, but not sure the i7 clocks as high as the 3570k ?
Interesting that no-one is going for SB despite being cheaper.

Any of these MBs have double spaced slots for CF/SLI ?

I`ve had boot loop thing... Most people suggested to throw out Mobo, all it took to reset bios with a screw driver...

Try do clock higher, if you turn turbo mode on the i7 can has a clock speed of 3.9 whereas the i5 will only have a clock speed of 3.8 plus although they have nearly the same clock speed they are different processors and are different so the i7 will benchmark higher nd perform beter than the i5

True, but I'd be looking at a >4GHz OC on this setup.

The 3.9ghz overclock is a buit in intel feature so it trchnically isn't overclocking it is just an optional setting you don't have to have a big cooler for it either as the stock one shuld be able to handle the excess heat produced by turbo mode
