After hearing the good things about the new Dell Vostro lappy, it's got me thinking.

I was wanting to upgrade my desktop (well, basically get a whole new pc!) but having a lappy for work would be highly useful.

Of course I would also want to play some games on it, such as HG:L and TF2.

Can anyone give me some insight on the gaming capabilities of the Vostro?

And lastly, what should i go for, a new desktop (£400 budget, no need for monitor etc) or wait a tiny bit longer for a Vostro?

I'm totally fickle on the decision

Flip a coin?

tbh, you're going to want an 8800 for Hellgate: London, so a laptop isn't going to cut it. On the other hand, laptops are handy.

My advice, get work to get you a laptop by asking to work from home 1 day per week, and that you'd like to swap your work desktop for a laptop (asuming IT job, in an office etc...)

wait a little for a better budget on a desktop, come january the hard ware in the vostro will be old tech there are not only new graphics cards due but new cpu's.
its indicative of a laptop and youll only have this problem worse further down the line, thats my perspective any way.
if i was you id budget £80-£100 for a cpu £60 for some ram and £80 for a mobo and £160 for a new hd2900pro if you cant wait till the new tech, other wise save a little more and bye the new product the new quads look tasty and the Q9300 @ 2.50ghz looks set to undercut the q6600 by a fair bit there earmarked for a $200 price tag so that should translate to a nice sterling price.
the new g9x series cards are just around the corner aswell so the waiting game isnt as futile with such a short space of time to get through. and it will beat the pants off of any laptop youll get in that price range, then if needs be a month or two down the line get a cheapish laptop iif that will do for work unless you need an uber lappy for work?

If you want a laptop for games then dont get one. Laptops are not for gaming, you pay a price for gaming laptops as well as the fact is usually has a bad battery and its heavy, its not worth it, for the price you pay you could get a cheap laptop and a pc lol

For the last year and a bit I've been using my 360 for games and laptop for surfing, work, etc.

Sold my 360 and thought I upgrade my laptop to one which I can play the odd game or 2.

Went for the Vostro which comes with an nVidia 8600MGT.

I'm no hardcore gamer and don't require uber high resolutions. I'm limited to the laptops max resolution of 1280x800 anyway.

I'm able to play CS:S at that resolution with everything on high and attain excellent frames per second. I'm tempted to purchased TF2 over the next day or 2 so I'll let you know how it copes with that. Can't see there being a problem as its basically the same engine. Can also get 150FPS on the Source Test.

3D Mark 2006 returned a score of 3300.

I was tempted to go back to a desktop but I'll be moving in with my girlfriend soon and space will be a premium, so purchasing another laptop was ideal. Plus, I can go anywhere in the house and browse.

The 8600MGT will play any game released pre 2007 with relative ease. Just don't go expecting to play Crysis and games out this year with everything on max quality.
