Decking. Horrible stuff. Needs cuddling and caressing yearly. I'm a bit sick of spending a day jet washing and cleaning every year. Last year I spent a small fortune on oil and this year it looks the same as it did before the oil.

Anyway I'm going to paint it this year, a mate did his and it seems to have lasted and is easier to clean.

Looking at these two

Ronseal decking rescue

Cuprinol decking stain

Anyone had any experience?

I've used cuprinol decking oil before, and I've been doing a fair bit of research as I've never been impressed.

In short, I'm about to strip mine down completely to apply Owatrol. I can't find a single bad word said against it. It's not cheap to do, but the results are supposed to be very impressive. The only problem is, you have to strip out everything that was in the wood before, but from what i understand once it's done it really does only need a basic maintenance coat each year which is quite cheap to apply.

I went with Aquanett & Net-trol to strip/prepare it, then Textrol to coat. I was going to start today but not sure I'll get time now

I find jet washing my deck quite therapeutic actually. However staining will peel over time. Decks need to be oiled ideally. Bit of sand in the mix to add abit of texture to help against moss slide and it's good for a year. Just accept its one of them job you need to do if you have a deck. Regardless of what coating you have on it you will still need to jet wash it.

Clean with jet wash and brush, oil, end of season clean and oil again.

I do this for my rents every year, no moss no peeling and deck looks as good as it did 5 years ago!

Decking needs tlc, end of!

I just used ronseal decking rescue on a wooden seat made from the same wood the decking is and it seems to be working well so far. Only time will tell.

put a thing first layer on. then a thicker second layer about 1 hour later. going to give it a week now bfore putting a third layer on it to just make sure.

i plan on every year cleaning it and applying another coat. it's cheap wood used by previous owners. so painting was the only option to keep it other than spending thousands on replacing it.

Ever thought of putting artifical grass over it. Seen a few people do it and the end results look pretty good.

would that stop the wood from underneath rotting away?

i think that is definetely an idea for the future. i'll paint it. see how it goes for a year or two then stick some astro turf down.

I cant see how that wouldnt make it worse. Wood rots with water, you want to minimise the time its wet, by trying to stop water penetrating (hence oils etc) and getting air to it to dry it when its wet

i'm giving it a good amount of ronseal rescue paint; 3 coats. plan on topping it up every year with another coat too to keep it fresh.

obviously it will still need cleaning but it should make it easier to do. after a few years and multiple coats i imagine it should be water tight enough to handle being covered by astro turf.

i think it's a good option for those with raised decking (the astro turf). mine is along the ground so after it's been painted a few times i could do it to make it "safer" for kids to play on, etc. as the 2 small patches of grass i have currently isn't safe as they are raised beds with stone surroundings.

Just given mine the first coat with Ronseal decking paint this evening and looking good so far.

Hopefully I'll get the second coat done tomorrow afternoon.

Will put some photos up when done.

Decking requires periodic maintenance. No oil/stain/paint will last forever, especially if the deck is used regularly.

I used Liberon deck oil on my new deck last year. It's been less than a year, but still looks new.

I've resigned myself to 2 or 3 days a year maintaining with jet washing, oil/stains etc. In truth, its hardly a major ball ache considering its much-needed good exercise. Since its a yearly ritual, I generally just go with standard Ronseal decking oil affair.

I've got a small area of decking to freshen up, and a perimeter fence to paint. Is there a single paint product that would capture both jobs? The decking is a small area at the back of the garden that is only used in the summer when I sit my garden furniture there to enjoy the rare nice weather - the point being that it doesn't get walked on much at all, so no real requirement for non-slip treatment or fancy oils.

I'm looking for something that will freshen the garden up and give the fence & decking the same look?
