Hi Guys,

I did do a quick search but couldn't really find an answer. Im hoping someone here can help.

Im going to be building some raised decking, its on sloping ground. It will be around 5m x 5m, im using 6x2" joists and 38mm thick deck board. From what I have read you need to have support posts every 1.5m. Is this supports on every joist, or is it supports 1.5m one way and 1.5m the other other way (if that makes sense).

Ta for any advise!

Imagine a 16 sided dice, look at the 16 face
. . . .

. . . .
. . . .

superimpose your square decking on that, so you effectively have a post every 1.7m in every direction. Connect every post with a 2x6, screw each beam together with two lag bolts.

I did have a look around for a handy guide to this but didn't stumble across one, so don't consider the question as answered because I'm not that happy with my answer tbh. I'm only posting (something) because nobody else did :)

The resultant stiffness is still going to be a combination of beam thickness + supports + number of posts + thickness of decking. Maybe look on youtube to get a feel for how others do it, the American decks are more solid in construction than the typical UK ones.

I some how missed this post.:o

Better to have too many supports, nothing worse than a deck which has too much deflection. (sag)

Depending on joist size, on a 150 x 50 joist & support at 1800mm maximum, & joists spaced at 400mm, though some recommend up to 600mm centres, having 400mm spacing will give less deflection on the decking boards.

Also have plenty of noggins to stiffen up the frame, stops the joists twisting.

Thanks guys, that's pretty much what I thought. Im going with 500mm centres, with lots of noggins, plus the DB is 38mm thick, so should be pretty solid!
