Hello,

Hope the video and this post will help you guys decreasing temps on your GPU. Effort is minimal. In my case went 10 C lower just with a use of a 92mm fan.

I suggest the best fan for this application to be a 92 mm fan, as my test shows is better than the 120 mm fan, haven't tried and 80 mm yet.

My setup is 7600 Ryzen, GPU 1080 Ti EVGA(not undervolted or OC), Lian Li OD 11 Dynamic XL.

If you have questions pls let me know.

Is the second test I've done on this particular mod, present driver 555.85 the earlier test was on 536 driver and on that was 8-9 C lower.

In the description of the video I posted results of a test in BF V with RPM reduced on GPU fans and back case exhaust fan for who is interested.

Fans used on my GPU are NF-B9 Redux x3 + 1 NF-A9 PWM

It will work on any card, even those without backplate.
On higher TDP cards 3070, 3080,3090, 4070Ti Super, 4080s, 4090, 7900GRE, 7900XTX will maybe do even a better job than on my 1080 Ti with only 290 W TDP

Hope it helps. Good Luck.

Thanks

Probably less benefit on cases with bottom intake fans
Bottom case fans will just give some turbulence to the airflow of you GPU fans. Also add more dust into your case, mesh or not. Backplate and VRAM temps will not be affected by bottom case fans. Don't see how. But I will test it in October in a Fractal Torrent case. However I will use only a 14 cm on low RPM 600 or lower, under that Asus 1070.

No need I have 3 140mm fans on the front of my case blowing over my 4080, and 4 120mm on the side front also, case corsair 500d airflow.
So to understand, the 3 x140 in front are intake and the 4x 120 mm are exhaust or intake as well? Are the 4x 120 cooling a rad?

Turbulence isn't the problem, bad noises will be almost entirely due to the grill pattern on the bottom, and effectiveness depends whether the feet are high enough to allow air to be drawn in, an inch or more is usually good enough. Also why is the third fan on the side set to exhaust? I had an OG O11 Dynamic years ago and the best setup was always 2x bottom intake, 2x top exhaust and 2 (or 3, didn't matter) side intake.

Is an old Arctic F12 Pro is pushing not exhausting, just looks odd. However even is 2011 old fan technology, the new Mobius OC fans manage to beat the F12 only with 2C.
The test I have done: F12 Pro and Mobius OC 120 as exhaust fan both set to 1600 RPM - 2x instances of Furmark in same time @1440p. My 1080 Ti AVG temps: with Mobius OC 120- GPU 50.5 and HotSpot 64.5, with Arctic F12 was 52.9 GPU and 65.9 on HotSpot. The max temps was higher with 3 C on Mobius test compared with F12. Also Mobius got nasty rotor noises when go over 1400 RPM which noise comes proud among all fans in my case.

Did you cut your rear case fan grill out with a knife and fork?
Metal sheet cutter, thick nose to. Not the best for this application but, had no choice with all the parts in computer. I realize how bad are the grills are after I mount all the parts in the PC. I have a jigsaw and I could cut all that much better and than sand down the excess, however you can't use jigsaw with all parts inside the case, metal residue, is too risky and might get sparks and shorts:cry:. Who's gonna look at it anyways?

The idea is, Lian Li shouldn't had that types of grills in the first place in a case that suppose to enhance the airflow and cooling. It is plenty of data regarding effects of case grills on airflow and noise impact on the fans but, they chose to ignore it.
This is one of such sources of data :https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/effects-of-grill-patterns-on-fan-performance-noise-107/
If Fractal Torrent XL was available at that time at a decent price I wouldn't hesitate a second. But hey, ROG certified marvelous sticker can increase the airflow in the case even with bad grills and is in the price already.

Touching cloth is fine, overheating is worst ;)
My heat is just fine thanks, don't give me the hard sell for the mod, my 4090 only gets a little hot when it is heavily stress tested, and even then it is below 65 c ! my case has has great air flow, the front fans even push air far enough to hit the front of the card's heatsink
, I can't do the mod now my left arm/hand do not work any more anyway, plus if I did get someone else to do it, it would pull air away from my top aio rad, plus the shroud on the 4090 is plastic on the back, so I can't see a fan there doing much for the temps, yes my aio rad is above the card, but only because the rad wouldn't fit in the front! the top rad is fed by the top of the side fan too, so bugger it!
I'm happy, so leave it at there please,
his mod has been around forever, so gz on finally catching on,
sure , you made a video about it, but don't pretend that you invented it! what's next, an intel pencil mod on old tech?
:(

I didn't pretend I invent it! I didn't say your setup needs it either. Don't put words in my mouth please.
I did it first around 2000, on my Riva TnT Eagle 64mb. I didn't even had internet connection back in 2000. I'm now back to this mod just doing it better pull not push as initially I mod it. Other people did it and is an old mod but, is nothing wrong with a reminder.
"it would pull air away from my top aio rad" No, will pull air from the back of your card towards top AIO. Is explained in the video that the fan on the backplate should be in pull config, not push.
I'll "leave it there" as suggested:eek:
