A few friends of mine from work are wanting to have a LAN party soon and it seems it has been left up to me to sort it all out. I have read a bit online about hosting a lan party etc, whats needed and i got on to servers.

I bought a tp-link 8 port switch for it and have started to learn how to set up servers, just done a ts3 server, and was wondering if it would be a good idea to build/buy a small server to host the games on? rather than on my pc.

I have no idea about setting up servers, but after reading through these threads and wanting to learn something new ,aside from building another pc, i think this would be interesting and worth investing time in.

cheers, dane

i would be prepared to spend some money on it and some of the other guys have said if i need some cash they will help me out, as for games it will be the usual, like cs:s, lfd2, tf2 etc as for the tp link 8 port switch it was the 10/100 one, do you think it would make a difference if i bought a gigabit switch instead?

and for a budget to make a server, using second hand/new, the bay and mm id say im prepared to spend around £200 or so.

well theres going to be around 8 of us, could be more in future, ive been pricing up second hand 16 and 24 port gigabit switches around £50 to £80, they seem quite good but i guess if the tp link one ive got will do then theres no point wasting money.
