Hi All,

As the name suggests, I'm fairly new to this field, have worked in Systems for years, but never really got my hands dirty!

Hopefully I can learn a great deal about what should and shouldn't happen with you push these frustrating little creatures to their limit!

I bought a PC from OCUK and have been extremely happy with it for the past year and a bit, however, I seem to have a bit of an issue. Is a 2.4 ghz (old I know by today's standards) which was pre-clocked by to 3 GHZ. Now, even when I try to revert to the same profile in the bios, all I get is 2.4 (using CPUID) which seems to change from svelte 400m athelete to a heard of tortoises stampeding through peanut butter.

I've read the begineers guide to o/c ing which is very detailed and informative, but to be honest without a little help to my fequent stupid questions (if someone wouldn't mind) I fear I'll total the system. I give the specs below, if anyone could give some guidance I'd be really appreciative, I'm afraid I don't even have a sister to offer as a sacrifice :O), but will offer great thanks...

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 - Kentsfield @2.4GHz
4GB PC2-6400 (400MHz) Corsair RAM
Radeon HD 4850 Graphics card (512MB RAM)
P5Q Asus

I did notice another thread about Q6600 but was a different mobo so didn't really want to hijack it

Any help would be grately appreciated.

Never used an OCUK overclocked profile but are there any power saving features on like EIST or speedstep?

Might all be ok but just idling at stock speed

Hello ICanBreakIt . . . Welcome to ocUK forums! :)

Please read and understand the OcUK forums rules and enjoy your stay!

  • Intel® Core™2 Quad Q6600
  • ASUS P5Q
  • 4GB PC2-6400 (400MHz) Corsair RAM
  • Radeon HD 4850 Graphics card (512MB RAM)
Pretty decent kit you have their . . . you omitted what CPU cooler you are using?

Getting that chip clocked up from 2.4GHz to 3.0GHz is pretty easy!

First download these three bits of software:

  1. CPU-z
  2. HWMonitor
  3. Prime95
unzip them all to a handy folder, run CPU-z again and again so you have three copies open showing [CPU] [MEM] [SPD] tabs, run HWMonitor and leave for two mins, then run Prime95 and select Torture Test >>> Small FFTs and leave for 15 mins . . . arrange all the windows in a neat arrangement and make a screenshot and save it . . . look in HWMonitor and if the CoreTemps haven't risen much past 50°C then wizz into BIOS and change these settings . . .

  • Ai OverClock Tuner [Manual]
  • FSB Frequency [333]
  • DRAM Frequency [DDR2-800]
  • CPU Voltage [Auto]*
  • Load-Line Calibration [Enabled]
  • Save & Exit
*the processor voltage (vCore) may need manually adjusting from [Auto] but see how you get on first with the board controlling the juice!

Once thats done repeat the CPU-z, HWMonitor & Prime95 process listed above but this time for an hour and let us know how the temps are!

Intel® Core™2 Quad Q6600 (Stock)
  • 9 x 266 = 2394MHz
  • 400MHz (DDR2-800) [2:3]
Intel® Core™2 Quad Q6600 (OverClocked)
  • 9 x 333 = 2997MHz
  • 400MHz (DDR2-800) [5:6]

All,

Thanks very much for the advice, I did try OC about the settings and it wasn't forthcoming.

Big Wayne, thanks for the idiots guide, managed to get it working perfectly, however, left the final tortue test after 30 mins as the temp's looked a little high. Please see s/s's.
With regards to the cooling, the case is an Antec 300 with two inbuilt case fans (one of which can kick out some seriously cold air!) and one on the mobo, not sure what it is, has intel on it but I'm sure when I bought the machine it was Artic something, haven't got the shipping docs anymore...

Cheers

Hello ICanBreakIt,

That all looks about right . . . the load temps are about 10°C too high which I think is due to either you living in a hot room *or* the motherboard is OverVolting the processor . . .

Either can you move to a colder country or can you go into the BIOS and manually set the vCore to 1.300v and run Prime95 again please . . . if that crashes bump up the vCore a notch to 1.325v . . .

One screenshot of a few hours on Prime will suffice . . . good luck!

I think it must be the processor, I'm hidden away in a corner near patio doors to do my evil PC deeds...

Thanks again for all your help and advice, I'm thinking tonight after a work do is not the best night to be carrying this out!

I shall post again once sober, I think that'll be around June :O)

Merry Christmas
