Just seen this on the web and thought it was pretty impressive, a 60m deep pool in Dubai, apparently just opened:


Only ever done Scuba diving once in Egypt but was pretty shallow, must need some real expertise to get to the bottom of this.
 
60m is well beyond safe depth for regular recreational diving, so I doubt that there will be a large number of tourists qualified to take advantage of the lower 30m of it.
It's sort of cool and would be interesting to do as a one-off, but the absence of any aquatic life in there would make it pretty boring actually.

It needs some sharks and a giant octopus to spice it up a bit.

All we want are freaking sharks with freaking laser beams on their heads.
 
Must be some money in it, there's maybe half a dozen of these extra deep pits and generally they're outdoing the last one by a few metres.

Give it a year, someone will dig a slightly deeper pit.
 
Looks like an escape room where the air supply is your time limit.

Half of me says its cool, the other says meh.

My guess is that they chose 60m because its the outer limit of diving on trimix that isn't hypoxic at surface pressures, so you won't need a travel mix to get to the bottom. Still very punchy depth though.

(for those not steeped in scuba diving, oxygen becomes toxic at high pressures, so when you dive really deep, the mix that you breath at the bottom might not have enough oxygen to sustain you at the surface or shallower depths. You take a 'travel mix' with a higher oxygen content to breath on your way down and way up. If you're not using a rebreather of course.)

Totally worth the effort to see darkness. Are divers not aware they can get the same experience by dunking their head under the bath and closing their eyes?
 
Hate swimming in open water where I can't touch the bottom, so something like this would be perfect for me to push that fear a little. Shame it's in Dubai though, a place i'm yet to see myself, but looks like the sort of destination I despise (lack of history and culture, just artificial experiences).

Good to practice those depths ahead of heading out to sea. The deeper they are, the more intact shipwrecks tend to be. Quite a few really interesting wrecks at 60-70m in seas around the UK

Ah gotcha. So instead of looking at beautiful pristine boats, we like to look at damaged wrecks. A bit like rubbernecking on the motorway when there has been an accident?
