I have a stainless steel 1kg jobbie with a basket and plastic lid (which just sits on top).

Its a complete nightmare to clean, I've thrown most bits in the dishwasher but the oil still doesn't come off, add to this that the control panel which houses the heating element can't be washed and therefore you never get it really clean.

Are the plastic tefal ones with a lockable lid any better? Or does anyone have some top tips for dissolving that nasty gunk?

Brillo pads and a lot if elbow grease

We had a top of the range delonghi which the element packed up on,it was nearly as much to buy a new element as the whole fryer so I went back to a normal chip pan

They are all hard to clean tbh,esp the lids and the bowl

I have a cheap one from the supermarket, had it years, and is like new. But I do empty it and wash it after each use. (I'm not a fan of the smell so the oil gets sieved into a sealed jar.

Sounds like a ball ache, but in all honesty, it's a simple rinse after each use, and then I'm good to go. Also allows me to have a range of different oils to choose from!

Id be tempted to soak it in some of that oven cleaner stuff. It really strips off the burned on stuff.

As long as you clean it after each use its not to bad. A built in tap makes it so much easier. It's when you let it sit it congeals and is a mare to remove.

Sodium hydroxide is caustic soda so be very careful when using it. Always add the powder to water never the other way around as it is exothermic and will heat the water.

It's very cheap to buy and it works very well, the process is the same as that for making soap so it turns the dried on oil to soap for you!

Wear long gloves & eye protection, and make sure you have a solution of baking soda handy in case of splashes.
