Hey,

I've been trying to transfer my mums files from her old computer that died to her new one, however I've been finding that windows can't copy several of the folders, with the error 'Cannot copy file:' and that's all. After a bit of investigation I've discovered my mum likes places folders within folders within folders, resulting a rediculously complex folder system. I think this is what is tripping windows up, it doesn't like files that are 15 folders deep (seriously!). It won't let me copy the deepest files because the filename is too long, anyone know of any software that could handle it?

If you can browse to the folder on the old pc, share the folder above it and then browse to this share on the other pc. You should be able to copy it then.

It's a bit long-winded and requires you making the folder structure on the new pc but you should be able to get it back.

I believe it's a 260 character limit for the path, we've had this problem at work. To get round it the easiest thing to do is shorten some of the first folder names in the structure.

or map some folders down on the old pc as a network drive on the new pc (reduces the number of characters that the new pc sees) ;-)
