Default clocks for a 4870x2?

Hi,

I bought the 4870x2 that I'm currently using 2nd hand from a place that wasn't the Members Market.
I believe the clock, at least the GPU clock is slightly faster than stock, but I'm not sure about the memory.

Can anyone tell me if this card is overclocked?
Also is there any way to tell if it was factory overclocked or if it was done by the previous owner flashing the BIOS with a custom BIOS or something?

So far it seems to be running OK (although I've only used it a limited amount so there could be hidden surprises!) but I'm just wondering if it's overclocked or not (as it would save me the hassle of trying to OC it).

What sort of overclocks would you expect to be able to get on a 4870x2?

Thanks.

Hi,

Yeah, looks like you have an overclock - a good one at that since generally the 4000 series aren't anywhere near as good clockers as the 5000 series. If you tinker with voltages and / or use watercooling then I expect you can achieve some fairly good gains but it may take a bit of work.

Mine above - I forget how high mine goes but something like 760 - 770 on the core and the memory is around 925 ish iirc. The overclock varies but when I last ran one I think I got something around the above figures.

Thanks mate.
I suspected that's what they were supposed to be as I'm sure I've seen the memory for the 4870s listed as 3600MHz, which I guessed would be 900MHz (why do you divide it by 4?) but that would mean mine was effectively 4000MHz, which seemed high. Although in fairness I'm pretty clueless when it comes to OCing, especially graphics cards, so that might have been a small overclock.

From what you've said that sounds like I might as well stick with that OC and not push it any more.

Well, unless the card actually has a really big problem I've not encountered yet it seems like I might not have got completely ripped off. Which is unlike me. OK, now I'm worried the card has a problem...

Is it artifacting? It'll almost certainly will if you push the clocks to high.

The memory is DDR5 which is quad pumped, so 4 x 9 = 36 (3600mhz).

Try a few games / benchies and see how you get on. Let us know what happens. Good luck! :)

Dude.. the card doesn't have a problem. The artifacts in BC2 are from crap drivers. 10.5a (10.5 hotfix) is what you need and that should solve the texture probs in BC2 :-) I had the same thing with mine until I got the correct drivers and it changed everything (just a shame I broke it later lol).

Given that your's is also under water, those clocks are just dandy!

Only games I've played so far to any extent are Bad Company 2 and Plants vs. Zombies. At one point during BC2 there were patches of the ground that were flickery, but I upgraded my drivers 10.4 -> 10.5 (can't find the 10.5a hotfix) and didn't notice it today, but it only happened in one section of one map, that I didn't play on today.
Despite pushing it to it's limits, Plants vs. Zombies seemed fine :)

I have also run Torchlight and Team Fortress 2, but mainly just to configure the graphics as I copied the Steam folder from another machine with a different setup. The brief try I gave both of those looked fine, but I think they need to be tested a bit more yet.

If I start to get problems I'll more than likely be back on here moaning, whinging and asking for help. Just hoping that doesn't happen!

As Scougar mentioned, I'm water-cooling the card. In case you're interested the card currently idles at 32C & 36C (is it normal to have a 4C gap?) and reached 40C & 46C (I think) while playing BC2 earlier, according to HWMonitor (which seems to agree with GPU-z).
