Well I did it yesterday and defected to the green side by removing my ATI X1900 XT and replacing it with a shiny BFG 8800GTX OC. I just couldn't take the R600 delays any longer!

This is a return to NVidia for me, the last NVidia I had was a TNT, and since then it's been ATI all the way 9800 Pro, X800 XL, X1900 XT and now back with the 8800GTX.

So far I am really impressed with the XP driver, I hated Catalyst Control Center, the speed, clunky interface etc. (I wish ATI had stayed with the classic control panel tbh), so I have been using ATI Tray Tools to effectively replace the CCC and still give me all the control I needed. One great feature of tray tools is the OSD (on screen display) which can display GPU clock/mem speeds, GPU/ENV temp, GPU memory used etc. etc. Does anyone know of a similar tool (with the exception of FRAPS) which can display all this information whilst running a DirectX/OpenGL window/full screen application with an NVidia card ?

As for performance of the 8800GTX compared to a X1900 it's just staggering - I only wish that Crysis MP Beta was ready now :)

Congrats and welcome to the 8800 club!

You will find your card will do well even on DX9 content which is great, so you can enjoy most of the games on max/full settings without any problems :)

Definately a excellent card. I suppose you had not much choice but to go to nvidia route - lot's of people are moving down the same route too - with the new 8900 refresh coming soon and ATI no where closer to releasing a card, it seems nvidia is coming up on-top in the g-card wars. More and more people will start going from ATI to nvidia.

when are the 8900 cards coming ??? march / april ??

8900's are supposedly about 3 weeks away, which is gona be 2+ months before the R600. :D

Welcome to the club, went back to green about 2x weeks ago here, had been ATi since the 9800pro days, but what a card Nvidia have produced here, im well impressed with the 8 series, and they finally sorted the iq as well, all them years their image quality hasn't been as good as ATi's, but they've surpassed it on the 8 series, fantastic cards. :)

3 weeks  wow really ?? i think i might hold out for abit then i was going to get a 8800 GTS 320mb since my cards gone for RMA but since ive got more college work to do and ive heard this i might just hold out.

I wouldn't buy an old ATi card if i was spending £150, not when the next gen 8800's are only about £40 more, id wait till i had enough for one of them, spending £150 on an old ATi card is pointless. :)

In the end it doesn't really matter whether its NV, ATI, Intel or whoever else is going to be making cards. Take each card on it's merits/demerits.

The 8800 is both the most expensive and one of the most outstanding cards I've ever had the pleasure of installing. No matter what you upgrade from, you'll have to laugh at how good it is...

Save up, as i edited. :p
In that case; we completely agree that 8800 is the only way to go, unless you have a strict budget of say £150 or less. Which was my entire point. ;)

It would be worth it to save up though IMO, very impressed with my GTS to date.

At the moment it does matter that its ATi imo, their cards are all old now so not worth buying, Nvidia is the only option to go for in the graphics card market untill ATi get their fingers out of their asses and get their R600 out, by which time they'll be 2x cards behind. :D

Yeah, very impressed with the GTS here to, phenomenal price for such a powerfull card. :)

Perfect! I've waited long enough for the R600 so another wee while isn't going to matter and when it comes out I can make a choice based on the merits of the two rivals and not have to worry about the new tech making it a stupid purchase.

I have been awaiting the r600 but with the card getting put back again
Nvidia looks the way to go.

Ideally I would like a 8900GTX but what reason do they have to release
this in March as it was meant to ruin ATI's launch party.

With the ATI card looking to be around May / June they could sit it out and
let folk buy what remains of the 8800 and keep the 8900 on the backburner.

I am looking to get a 24" later in the year or I would have gone with the
320GTS.

This is the only part I am waiting on to complete my new rig

Sorry to go a bit OT, but since when was the R600 2+ months away ?
Last I heard was scheduled for end of March/beginning of April ?

Anyways I agree on Nvidia's IQ, right up there now, its just a pity their driver team is not as good as the competition (IMO), otherwise I wouldn't have sold my Sli 8800's in expectation of R600.

I also agree if they dont get it out soon it will be a dead duck, didnt realise the 8900 refresh was due so soon, what is the info/specs on that ?

Trouble with that is, the 8800's are old hat now, they are already 5 months old (long time in graphics cards that), ppl would probably wait until R600 came out rather than buy an old 8800, so at least if they release the 8900's now before R600, then thats an icentive to buy again, and not wait for the R600 rather than buy an old 8 series as said, plus if they release it now 2+ months before R600, they will do even more damage, as ppl will also say 'im fed up of waiting for R600, im gona buy one of these instead'. :)

Well thast my opinion anyway. :D

It was scheduled for end March beginning of April, but now AMD have delayed it till Q2.

ATI re certainly not doing themselves any favours here.

NV seem to be doing everything right at the moment.

And I say good on em! :D
