Defending in Pro Evo 5...

So this is starting to grate a bit now. My housemates and I play Pro Evo 5 a fair amount on the PS2, but one of us always plays with a Chelsea style wing forward setup. Eg. 3 up front, with two really wide and really forward. If he gets into trouble he just boots it up to one of them and if they're in even the tiniest amount of space, he gets a break going and invariably scores. How on earth can you defend against this? I've tried 5 at the back with the two WF's being man-marked which helped a little, but left me with no options at the front, or always losing it in the middle. I've tried 3 at the back, 4 at the back, playing with WF's myself (i can never seem to get it to them)... but its getting really boring now... our games pretty much consist of chasing him down the wing for 90% of the game. :(

Any tips?

Also is there any way to stop Ronaldinho? Him playing as a WF is just impossible to stop - even with two men man-marking him aggressivily - its ridiculous!!

EDIT: And this is with my team as AC Milan! (Whats the best formation to play with ACM?)

You could try 5 across the middle, Kaka in behind the forwards, with 2 DM's bottom left and right to help stop the rot.

It seems though, that your back 4 arn't spread across the middle enough, always call the 2nd man to help when you can

You could try doing exactly what he does, and pee him off

then he might change tactics

thats if you can do what he does better than him ;)

I normally end up calling a second man (with square, right?), if not a third, fourth, fifth.. lol. Probably doesnt help in the end. If its against Ronaldinho its useless. I'm happy with standing off him and letting him try to get round but with Ronaldinho he's just too damn fast. Turns one way and sprints and he's past your guy. :(

Would it be worth moving the fullbacks wider out? He always puts his WF's literally on the bylines, and obviously the default for SB's isnt that wide.

Thats not a bad idea actually. Although his WF's are always pushed so damn forward my DM's would be pretty much out of the game.

Anyone else got any good ideas? :)

Play the same formation. If he wants to play it wide, just head the ball to your DMC and play it forward.

Or, he's possibly just better than you?

DMC?

The problem is that there's never anyone picking up the WF's as he plays them so far forward. Most of the time its a counter-attack, so that means my SB's have moved up and left them. I guess one thing to do would be to stop the SB's going forward when in attack (with the arrow thingies).

That has occured to me. And he is good at dribbling...(hence the whining about Ronaldinho, lol) but i've noticed his exploit and thats the WF's. Hence i want to counter it!

If they are so far forward play the offside trap!

WF's can be annoying but not as annoying as the same cheap goal that ppl always seem to go for online. The one where they run wide of the goal drawing keeper out then a simple pass sideways for a tap in.

I usually try the 2nd man close down (square button) and controlling the defender in the middle or trying to guess where the pass will go, rather than trying to control the tackler on the wing.

Yeah, changing your player so the computer controls the player closest to the ball whilst you fill the spaces left by him with the player you control yourself is a good technique. Certainly helps me out.

If you don't fancy that, just don't commit to tackling the wingers straight away.

Pressing I think its R1+R2 together performs a super cancel. When the ball starts to head towards his winger whilst you're controlling the full back, press these and run towards your own goal so he can't turn you too quickly.

Thats all I could suggest without seeing exactly what you mean.

Hope my useless advice helps a little :p

Don't tstand off them, keep pushing towards the player. Ronaldinho should be quite easy to stop if you close in a second man, and keep the standing tackle held. Failing that a couple of kicks is always a winner :P

Woah tell me about it. I dont want to be a sore loser but the majority of his goals are exactly that. Pop it out from his defence straight to his WF, run down the wing, get just into the box and either cross it or duck inside to shoot or pass it across. Its so annoying!!

I played another 3 games of which i lost two and drew one. This was playing with 3 CB's and two DM's pretty much as wingbacks that never went forward. Didnt work at all, somehow his WF's managed to stay onside (even when i stepped up the 3 defenders and set them to go for the offside all the time) but also just behind my wingbacks. So frustrating! I'm gonna try playing diamond 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 with the defence pushed way back towards my own goal and see if i can just just crowd him out.

EDIT: Does anyone know what 'covering' means when setting an individual's mark settings? Does it kinda mean that when needed, he'll help out the guy next to him? Cover their back? Might be useful to set one of my CB's as that i guess.

Oh yeah, in the individual settings screen in the tactics, go to the attack section of your fullbacks and set it so that they both have arrows pointing backwards towards their own goal.

This might help..
