On the advice of many, I went and bought a Gelid Tranquillo to replace my Artic Cooling Freezer 64. I thought the Freezer was a bit loud, and I could probably shave a few degrees off my CPU temp as well.

Well, I'm hugely disappointed. Hugely. Not only is the Gelid a lot louder than the Freezer 64, it's not brought temps down (idle is even up a couple degrees), and it's actually too large to fit in my case with the sides on properly.

Basically, I would say a "quiet" cooler is not audible over the other sources of noise (aka in my case a Gigabyte 460OC). If the CPU cooler is louder than the GPU cooler, that's some pretty epic fail right there.

I use Speedfan btw, and have slowed the Gelid to about 80%. It's still far too loud.

Also well recommended were the Sharkoon 2000 rpm fans. I was amazed how loud that thing was. It's now running at 50% under SpeedFan and still I consider it £8 wasted.

Given that I want a genuinely quiet setup, I'd like some proper advice from people with working ears, if possible ;) The Gelid isn't quiet, but I'd like to find something that is.

Ta!

Thermolabs Baram with akasa apaches in push pull
Titan Fenrir with a single apache.
both of those are around the same price point and offer great performance :) and whisper silence :p

120mm fan at ~1000-1200rpm

Maybe two.

Whatever cooler you want.

For extra noise reduction get yourself a sound dampening case.

What is in my case?

An H50 with two Enermax Magma fans at 1100rpm
Two more Enermax Magmas at 1100rpm are case fans
One 200mm fan in the roof on low speed
One 7200rpm HDD, Two 5400rpm HDD
One 80mm fan at 1500rpm cooling the HDDs
One HX650 PSU
One 6950 with the large 6970 HIS IceQ cooler

All in a mini P180. You tell me if it's quiet.

I have a thermalright ultra extreme with one apache 120mm PWM fan pushing at 10% at 30C and 100% at 50C also an antec tri speed 120mm fan at low setting pulling.

I have one antec 120mm tri speed intake on low setting.
I have one antec 120mm tri speed exhaust on low setting.

I have a sapphire HD5850 on auto fan settings.

On idle it is hardly audible, on load it is a gentle hum, gaming the GPU is loudest but not noticeable.

Max CPU load temp is 55C in a warm room.

I would say this is quiet.

andy.
