Really odd question this - If I buy a Device CAL for Windows Server 2008 what is it actually linked to? Could I buy a Netgear Powerline Adapter and tie the license to that, allowing any user to access the server via their individual laptops? (Would save me a fortune if it were allowed!)

No, the rules for CAL's specifically state that they are not to be used on any load balancer type setup that would allow you to connect more devices than you are licensed for.

Similarly, if using SQL Server to run a website, you'd need a CAL for every user of the website unless you license it per processor IIRC.

To be fair you would never buy a "per seat" license for an SQL server attached to a website.
You've got absolutely no way of knowing how many visitors you will get and the moment you went over your per seat alocation you'd be illegal.

You can if it's via a private intranet, in which case you licence all your staff.

But, no, you can't licence SQL CALs like that.

Burnsy - I had a technical question about WHS that you might know the answer to. It would suit my purposes down to the ground apart from the fact that it only supports 10 users... however, from the MS website:

How many computers can connect to Windows Home Server?

Up to 10 home computers can install and use the Windows Home Server Connector software which enables automatic backup and access to shared folders on the home server.

That doesn't say anything about the number of users on the workgroup... I don't need to use the automatic backup facility or Connector software - I just need to access the files - so does the 10 user limit still apply?

Or... can a single user log on multiple times simultaneously? If I had 5 users that all needed the same access (ie - programme authors) could they all log in as 'Author' on the same account from different machines and count as 1 'user'?
