I have Googled and searched many threads but it seems there are differing answers as to what an i3 540 can safely run at.

I see 72 degrees listed a few times, but this seems an overly cautious number.
I would have expected something a little higher, like mid 80's or something.

I'm doing some SETI crunching and have had to hold my CPU back for fear of hitting 72 degrees and I just wondered..... do I have to hold it back to the high 60's ?

So, anyone know what it safe ?

Cheers

70 is for when running on full load on stress tests, like the processor sitting constant at that temp. I've seen processor hit 90s and survive, just if it ever gets to 90, turn the thing off.

So, I could easily set something like 77 degrees as my automatic shutdown temp ?

I should be able to crank a lot more crunching out of the ole CPU before I reach those heady heights :)

90-95c is fine for stock. Around 80c is fine for overclocking (temperature/voltage tolerance decreases as you overclock). The 72c figure you see is tcase, which doesn't relate to core temp.

Yeah it's at stock.
Usually idles at around the mid 30's.
So I think I'll be happy running it in the low to mid 70's.......... if it dies, just an excuse to get an i5 ;)

Well here's what coretemp says...
