Is there any noticable difference in performance when defragmenting in safe mode than a full boot?

Bliss

Do you mean does a defrag run quicker in safe mode? Possibly because there are less services running and less demands on memory.

I think a defrag in Safe mode is meant to be better because the defrag can move more system files around since they aren't in use.

Just watch and wait for someone more clued up on this stuff come in and completely contradict me.

That's the part i'm interested in :D

I'll give it a go later if anybody else can shed some light on the question.

Thx for the reply.

In that case I might be right. I have seen a thread somewhere, perhaps here, saying a defrag in safe mode resulted in better defragging because the system files can be moved too.

As said if files are in use when defragmentating the drive it wont be able to access them as such yes in safe mode youll do a better job as only minimal system fuctions are used to boot the Pc into windows.

Youll only see a real difference though if the drive is heavily fragmented or your using a Fat32 file structure. Fragmentation of NTFS doesnt have as high an impact and as such youll notice little difference.

I defragged in safe mode and it took absolutely ages, im taking 3hrs. Generally it takes about an hour.........

I use Executive Software Diskeeper, sure its very much like what the last guy posted.

Defrag multiple drives at once, at least 5x the speed.

If you can grab a copy of the one i'm using it has lots of handy options, like screensaver mode so you don't have to defrag the computer manually.

I'm sure theres other alternatives though, see what the fellas say... :D
