Defrag wont complete

Trying to defrag drive D: which has a fair bit on it, but plenty of free space (20%) I'm getting the following:

Volume (D
Volume size = 145 GB
Cluster size = 4 KB
Used space = 116 GB
Free space = 29.15 GB
Percent free space = 20 %

Volume fragmentation
Total fragmentation = 25 %
File fragmentation = 50 %
Free space fragmentation = 0 %

File fragmentation
Total files = 5,136
Average file size = 25 MB
Total fragmented files = 173
Total excess fragments = 242,881
Average fragments per file = 48.28

I can't reboot in safe mode because the machine is headless, so what options do I have?

Are you using the defrag s/w in wondows? If you are, you could try Diskeeper Lite.

I know you say there's 20% free space on the driver, but off the top of my head I think defrag s/w needs at least 15% free space. Maybe the fragmented files are of such as size that that even 20% free space isn't enough.

As the drive is labled as D: I'm assuming that it isn't the drive with windows on, right?

I asked the question as the partition/drive with windows on should have 50% of free space ; if it's less, then you'll notice a slow down in performance and it's time for a larger partition/drive.

Microsoft recommend 30% free space on a Windows partition.
