Defraggler -what's it doing?

I downloaded Defraggler because it was mentioned here on the board, I defragged my laptops 120GB drive and while It was working I noticed that it was freeing up space on the drive, by the time it had finished I had gained a whopping 8 gigs from nowhere.

Ive now got it defragging my 500GB desktop drive but to my horror it is doing the opposite and eating my disk space lol. It's currently at 18% and has already gobbled up 11gigs of my free space.

What is it doing and should I stop it?

A fairly quick response would be appreciated before it eats the whole thing :D

Hmm it's now at 23% but hasn't taken anymore disk space so maybe it was creating a swap file for itself to move material into while it defrags it and then puts it into the correct place

Maybe it will give me the used space back again when it is finished lol

Ok things got weirder, It started eating space again and by the time it got to 30% Defraggler had eaten almost 14gigs of hard drive.

I stopped it and restarted the PC just to make sure I got the space back again but it now seems to be permanently gone, I can't find an unexplained 14 gig file and there is nothing of significance in Defragglers folder.

Can anyone give me any pointers as to where this free space has gone to and If I can get it back please?

Check the 'System Volume Information' folder in the c:\ drive.

You'll need to be viewing Protected Operating system files to see the folder. Also be aware that when you right click to check the size it will not tell you as by default your username will not have access. If you were to take ownership of the folder I'll bet that's where your missing GB's are.

Edit. The above is for System restore files, so clearing out old restore points will probably also free up that missing space.

I'm using Vista home premium 64bit, Ive enabled the view hidden files and folders option but I don't seem to have a system volume information folder :(

If you still can't find the missing GBs, download & install JDiskReport.

It'll break down what's using the non-free space on the drive :)

Blimey this is a total minefield, I eventually got into the folder and there are some huge files in here -one of them is 21 gigs  but they all have long names made up of letters and numbers ha ha.

I can't get into the system restore folder I just can't see how to get past the security protocols -I don't know why my PC just dosn't see me as the administrator being as I own the computer lol.

Ill download the JDiskreport programme instead as that sounds a lot easier :D

JDiskreport has just raised more questions than it's answered, Windows says I have used up 149 gigs of my hard drive, JDiskreport says Iv'e only used up 83.7 gigs and that the biggest file it can find is only 4.3 gigs in size however it also admits that it's scans only go 3 folder layers deep and no further so that kind of doesn't help me much.

I think Ill just have to live with the missing space and forget about it, oh well not to worry, cheers for the help guys :)

Just tried it and it now says Iv'e used 84 gigs, but Iv'e just been looking through "Administrated tools" so Vista may have created a report somewhere to track what I was doing.

3-folder-levels deep is nothing. you need to get deeper than that in order to actually see all the files.

Hi, I just uninstalled Defraggler and switched back to Auslogics defrag.
Just got back over 40gig after restarting
Hope this helps.

the windows defragger in vista is terrible, no used feedback at all. (ie, it doesn't tell you anything!)

This is true, it is truly awful.

Definitely something weird going on with Defraggler. I might try it and see what happens. Never heard of this happening before though, and suddenly it happens to two people on the same day.

Hmm.

What version of Defraggler are you both using?

I was using version 1.02.085 I only updated it yesterday.
I did a fresh install of Vista x64 4 days ago because I thought it was itunes that used up my disk space, now I know it was Defraggler .
Defraggler is still in development so maybe it will get better.

Yep Ive got exactly the same version and I also only downloaded it a couple of days ago -clearly it's an issue with the latest release.

Iv'e had a bit of good news, I started Windows defrag, left it running and 6 hours later not only has it found my missing 14gigs but It's found another 10 gigs on top of that so it turned out all right in the end thank goodness.

Now that I know I'm not the only person with this problem Ill uninstall Defraggler and will probably try this Auslogics defrag programme that brucey is talking about -cheers for the tip mate :)
