What are the standard field of view values for 4:3 16:9 and 16:10 ? I remember when wide-screen first hit it was necessary to change the fov to 90 (I think) for 16:9.

Does any one remember any of the values ?

This game supports widescreen out of the box. Just go to the video options menu, select widescreen 16:9 or widescreen 16:10, and select your resolution. That's it.

^ Halflife 2 , it might support it but until i changed the fov to atleast 90+ i was getting bad nausua :(

FEAR 2 and Killzone 2 are a complete no go for me. Have you tried playing them Neil?

Didn't have much problem with FEAR2 ( nausua ) never played killzone 2 , painkiller gets me very dizzy/sick quickly though.

There is no standard, it is whatever the developer of the engine wants it to be or what they allow it to be. They can only make a judgement on what they think looks "right". There is a range of viable FOVs before they hinder your ability to play the game, whether by the rendering engine itself not being able to support it properly or everything appearing as if you were looking at it through a crystal ball.

Agreed.

For some background knowledge, the whole changeable FOV concept (like so many other cvars) was introduced by Quake, which was designed with a 4:3 aspect ratio in mind and a default FOV of 90.

However, quite a few subsequent games use lower FOV, around 75-90 is typical.

For guidance, FOV 90 at 4:3 is the equivalent of 90*(16/10)/(4/3) at 16:10, or 108.

Personally I change my FOV depending on the game.

Well generally speaking the more open the gaming area, the lower the FOV you need. So in fairly tight games like Quakeworld you can get away with a much higher FOV; I use 122 but it was as high as 133 at one point. Quake 3 is slightly more open so I use around 115 I think. Most modern FPS I settle for something in the 95-105 range (maybe even 90 for those with really open expanses like Far Cry/Crysis etc.)
