quick question, as ive never modified my car (not had one worth doing so yet)

how much do you have to declare to the insurers. Ive seen modified cars that include huge spec list (sneaky peakers impreza for one http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17784012) do you have to declare each item individually ?

and secondly do they bump up your insurance like £5 per strutbrace or something, or how does it work ?

depends on the insurer, some ask for all specs. Including things like alloys. Others only really care about BHP and charge a set amount per extra 10bhp. The only way for insurance for modded cars is on the phone or email the spec list.
For example, adrienflux last time I phoned them, didn't care about wheels, braces, brakes etc, but charged x amount for extra bhp above the original spec.

Pretty much as he said. Find a place that does SPECALISE in mods, dont try and mod with tesco or norwich union as u will get bent over on the premium. go with flux, HIC, liverpool victoria etc....

Also don't bother going with the likes of Elephant & Admiral (same parent company) - they will charge you extra for mods but the fine print in their policy documentation says they only replace stolen/damaged parts with factory OEM parts anyway...

...so you tell them about a set of alloys, they charge you extra for letting them know/increasing the value of the car, but if the wheels got nicked you'd only get a standard set of alloys as replacements!

Insurers have a reputation of using any excuse to get out of paying you, or so I have heard, so whenever I have changed things on my car, no matter how small (sill kicks for example) I tell them

On my bike, it cost an extra £25 to declare my mods, but none of them get replaced during an accident.

Scort.

Cost me extra £17 to tell elephant about a k+n filter system, think that was the admin charge for posting the amendment letter though.
Next time I'll make a few mods before telling them heh heh

Everything - every single little change.

My insurers are pretty flexible, especially on my policy, so not declaring something to them seems stupid.

best quote i got from the comparison website was Liverpool victoria

they mod friendly then ?

Not any more.

With any modded car I'd start with the owners club website/forum and see who gets recommended - often certain companies specialise in certain vehicles.

As for listing, I list the lot, but until I hit 400bhp I don't pay extra for the mods. And even then it's only about £30 - that's Keith Michaels.

I'd have a rear anti roll bar on the Skoda tomorrow if it wasn't for then having a "modified" car as far as insurers are concerned.

Not sure I can be bothered with the hassle for one or two mods. Would be different if I was going all out on it and getting lots of bits done.

I put up a thread a while back about mod friendly insurers which people added quite a few to. A search should bring it up :) EDIT- infact here it is :p http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=10087163#post10087163

I declared all of mine, but seeing as they include a Cat 1 alarm it actually lowered my premium overall :D

Someone's bound to knock me off the bike sooner or later and I'm not going to do anything that may lead to me being more out of pocket than I have to be in that situation, seeing as I'll presumably be fairly hacked off already.

Just got a Meta system fitted to my bike, going to give them a ring in the week to drop my premium too :D. I use NUD for my car and bike, for the car they load it something rotten but for the bike they seem much more leniant. Just finished fitting my braided lines and my new front and rear shock/forks are clearing customs from the states... new toys!! woo hoo!!!:D
