right I installed ubuntu to once again try it out but yet again it has failed to make me happy. it is horrible to use, and generally irritates me. from no wpa support without installing stuff which then wont install to not being able to install my ati drivers so i can use a proper screen res.

as much as i want to try linux, windows works. ubuntu doesnt. i will have to install it again as im doing a computer science course that requires it, and the fact that i'd love to learn to use it. which distro apart from ubuntu can you guys suggest?

thanks

Mandrake uses KDE yes. Just go back to windows if you expect everything to work out of the box.

it is all very well and good saying that, but the fact remains that at some point i will have to use linux. i might install mandrake and see if that is any better.

firstly, put your toys back in the pram

did you try reading the ubuntuforums? or using the automatix script? I have an ATI in my laptop and ubuntu is running lovely on it.

Just use a real mans distro like gentoo, learn how to configure stuff in a text file instead of a silly gui, should solve all your problems.

Ati cards have dodgy 3D support, but IIRC all cards should have 2D support, it's just a case of knowing how to install and configure it.

WPA supplicant again is a tricky thing, but if you read the man, and write your own configuration it can work very well and be set up very quickly.

Reading the man and hand configuration can never be beaten by some attempt to auto-setup a config.

Another advantage of gentoo is it's very bleeding edge, which may be of use as a Comsci. I've had Comsci students ask to come and see my setup when they knew I had XGL working when it was in very early days.

might try gentoo have just put wandriva on and it seems quite nice. I cant cet it to 1280 x 800 resolution yet but i'll figure it out!! i did read ubuntu forums and the stuff suggested didnt work, however it did work before when I had previously installed it.

I would like to learn to configure stuff manually but it is something with a large learning curve.

If your doing an operating systems module at uni, Linux from scratch or whatever custom distro your uni provides will be of more use, than mandrake/ubuntu.
You can write your own bootload and boot a small floppy disk os. This will give you more understanding of how OS's work.

Gentoo is fine for learning on but I don't find it practical to use as a desktop since you spend forever compiling things, to gain very little speed increases :p Arch linux for me is ideal, since its optimized for 686 and provides binary packages.

I can recommend Operating Systems: Design and Implementation - by A Tanenbaum if you want something to read about OS's.

You need to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf if your using xorg.

I may also add that (hopefully) you will have another unsung resource regarding linux and configuration when you start your course- your classmates :)

Hopefully helping each other out, sharing tips and pooling resources should allow you to get more from linux and learn it.

n.b. although you will be using linux at uni you will probably be using a fairly locked-down setup and thus will not be expected (or hopefully able) to do any configuration on it other than within your own home directory (which would include things like application settings).

I would also recommend reading through "Running Linux" from O'Reilly at some point- your Uni library should have a copy. It gives a good, non distro-specific (although mainly based on RH/Fedora) introduction without being too patronising :)

right i have put ubuntu back on as I am determined to crack this wireless problem.

anyone know if it supports an acer 5021 laptop wireless adaptor and if so how do i configure it?

thanks
