Find one, test ride it, see what you think.

If it fits the bill in terms of what you want and what you can afford insurance wise then the only thing left is to actually go and play with one.

Unless you have a habit of dropping bikes or just like to wheel them around with the engine off the weight doesn't make a great deal of difference.

Weight won't be an issue, but be aware that's a huge jump in power - 75bhp (?) to 175bhp. The K1300 models are hyperspace warp speed machines.

Get a test ride though, they're meant to be awesome bikes. Get one with the shift assist. :D

Definitely test ride one, but power-wise, I'd say go for it ;).

I can see myself having my current bike for a few years, but I intend to upgrade to something like a s1000r in the future.

Rode out to Wales a couple of weekends ago with a mate on a K1300S. Really nice machine - very capable and very fast. That front suspension though..!

Definitely test one and see how it feels wheeling it around on and off the bike, I'd have thought if you were comfortable on an R1200 then you'd have no problem with the K. You'll need to be disciplined at junctions - the first (and only) time I dropped my K was me trying to keep it rolling when coming up to a junction - but this applies to any heavyweight.

Are you sure you want panniers for the commute rather than a top-box though? I really dislike filtering with panniers especially when they are an inch or two wider than the bars.

I took the k1300r out for a full day and its great for covering a lot of miles in a hurry . Is it fast? Fast enough but i found it soulless and to German . Dont get wooed by the power and give it a good ride on lots of different roads . Its a big old buss and i could not stay with my lad on a dt125 on the B roads .

I own a k1300s, am on my second now so I guess I'm biased.

After owning for a while I think many bikes are as quick or able to keep up with <insert nobody cares> as one has the testicular fortitude to try.

Test one with the ESA if you can. Me at 65Kg can tell the difference between the modes, but you have to actually push on to notice.

I've not tried the naked, but assume you actually have to hold on.

As regards power, I went sv650, two years without a bike, a couple with an f800st and then the k. Just want to live and you might live.

Yamaha FZ1 seems ok but I don't really like the looks of it and then I see a BMW K1300R.

The K1300R is one of the ugliest looking bikes around IMO, it makes the FZ1 look like a work of art. However if you want a properly powerful, naked bike for two up touring duties I doubt you will anything more competent, though they are quite thirsty, especially compared with your SV.

I like the look of the K1300R for sure they are a marmite bike, I would go for a yellow one nearly did last year.

The same can be said for a TL1000s I owned one a few years back not every ones cup of tea in the looks department but I loved it she was a nasty little brute :D

Well after a lot of thinking and frankly this thread was great to get more opinions, even if I was slow to act cause ended up waiting for 2yrs NCB. I'm picking up a bright orange K1300R this evening :) Very excited! Pictures shall follow probably tmrw for daylight...

Lovely and great color nice one :)
