the cable must be a cross-over cable rather than the standard straight through ethernet cable. - see FAQ (last time i looked it was in there - if not google). when connecting a cable - check for link lights at either end.
another possibility why it isn't working is that there are no ip address being given out. set static ips in the same range/subnet to be sure.
