can you get picasa for the mac? if you can then it is pretty good.

Try just looking for viewing pics. You can also set iphoto to just copy the files so you can maintain your folders in pictures as normal.

Can't you just drag the images from iPhoto to where you want them rather than looking through finder?

Both are excellent at organising, but alas not free.

Personally I don't use iPhoto.

I use Aperture, just set up the import options correctly and it wont touch your file structure it just adds them to its library, iPhoto also has the option of doing this afaik.
