A dedicated PC will chew power all day and night if on 24/7. A NAS box like mine uses about 10W ie what your TV uses on standby! Also runs an FTP server for the net if needed.
Oh and mine is PATA. Same as the ones sold by OCUK (Icybox NAS)
Ensure you are using an active PSU - that is what I have and it is about 96% efficient. The whole box for me runs about 100W. Yes, it's more than a NAS box on its own, but not that much, plus I can have it wake on LAN and standby when not in use.
