At higher res & for faster cards that can use the larger frame buffer its helpfull.
However at 1280x 1024 you are probably better off with a faster card with 256MB (should be a sufficient frame buffer) than a slower card & 512MB, though any higher res & thats where 512MB is probably preferred, but only if the card is quick enough to use it properly.

EG: A 7300GS 512MB card will not do much better than a 256MB card at any res.
 
The 7300GS statement was just an example, i did read you had a 7600GS, but even that card an increase to 512MB ram wouldnt have made much difference to its performance at all.

Well you should get about 30-40% increase by going to the 2600XT.
