Boss or not it is illegal to video record a publicly accessable area without posting notice of survaillance.

I thought it was legal to record them, but the video wouldn't be admissible as evidence in a court unless they knew about the camera ?

i think this might be going a bit to far for someone who is nicking ya coffee :D. maybe you should pay your staff better money and they might buy there own coffee .
:D

I doubt his office counts as a public place if it is a privately owned building

If anyone other than the OP has access to that room, which in this case they obviously do, it is 'publicly accessable'.

Video recording people without their knowledge is illegal.

no its not

Its not illegal unless its invading their privacy. The stuff you've seen on TV about people being told they cant film is only when it invades their privacy. When filming neighbours etc.. this usually meant their CCTV cameras were facing towards their neighbours house's, which is an invasion of privary. Providing its a public place (like the office) its perfectly legal

how do you think TV crews turn up to city centres and just start filiming people for the obligatory "christmas shopping" article they do every year.

Reason i know this is we had a spate of vandalism at my last job. to such an extent that somebody decided it would be a good idea to mix in razor blades with the hand towells in the toilets, obviously in the hope somebody would pull the hand town onto their hand and gash them with the razor blades

our employer put hidden cameras in the toilets facing the hand towells to catch the person doing it. They got legal advice before they did it, and provided it was in a publicly acessible place (ie the toilets) wasnt invading privary (ie wasnt pointed at the toilets / urinals) it was perfectly legal.
