I've encountered VSSwriter problems backing up SQL and Exchange when AOFO was turned on for that job.
Make sure AOFO is turned off when backing up anything transactional.

Obviously make sure all the jobs are properly segmented and broken down for each individual server, or do three jobs;
All files
All SQL DBs
All VMs

I've just spent a few days setting up a CA Arcserve deployment. To say the software is unintuitive is an understatement.
Currently troubleshooting a 'generic' error message when backing up an Exchange ISR. JOY.

Good times.

Two resoundingly happy Arcserve customers.

Edit: Just to clarify, I've set up BE and Arcserve. I find the Arcserve interface unintuitive, not to mention deploying the agents etc. is a total pain in the **** since it doesn't deploy to DFS machines remotely.

BE on the other hand just generally works, has a better interface and the errors are rarely stupid generic things like "Failed to receive data from the agent." which could literally mean anything.

If you're under maintennence there are two answers to this:

  1. Contact Symantec Tech Support. Once you get past the first line jockeys they're actually quite good.
  2. BackupExec 2010 is out, perhaps you'll have more luck with that? Looking to install it here next week.

Have a look at Microsoft DPM, 2010 version has just RTM. Cheaper compared to BE, but it doesn't support Windows Server 2000.

I'm currently trying out DPM2010 RTM at the moment.

Got it installed on our HQ site backing up a site in Edinburgh, about 350Gb of data over a ADSL line... it started on Wednesday and the volume syncs are still going. It is chugging along though. Once the bulk is done, I'm hoping the 'incremental' will be ok.

Keep up updated. We are about to purchase BackupExec 2010 and like the look of DPM

Do you have one dedicated server that handles all the backups and does nothing else, or have you installed the backup software onto a box that already has a purpose?
DC/SQL server etc.....

Sounds like the box may be overloaded, should run some performamce counters against it for a few days until you have the problems then analyse the data.

Good luck, these things are a bugger :(

As an update, er, it's still backing up! :(

The large amount of data seems to be upsetting it, the Volume Backup of the main E: drive has ran through three or four times only to finish as being inconsistent forcing it to consistency check the entire drive again. The OS C: drive finished and worked fine for a week then suddenly went inconsistent as well, I've not forced a check as I'm waiting for the E: drive to finish.

Think I'm probably going to have to give up on it tbh. The ADSL line is likely the problem but I've no alternative and 80% of the data we backup is in remote offices.

Back to the drawing board for me...

As much as it pains me to say it, have a look at Doubletake

Im trying to get DPM working at the moment, we seem to of purchased the only tape drive that it doesnt like to play with when running Server 08 but apparently will work with 03, so I install Server 03, patch it etc, now I cant get DPM to install.

Only trouble with virtual servers is you cant throw them out the virtual Window!

We've had nothing but problems so far with BE2010. Fortunately so far it's only the trial, so will be showcasing DPM before making a purchasing decision.

Never heard of DPM looks good does it support backup to external drive?

Currently have one of our customers using BE 2010 have to say its fairy easy to use and supports Backup to disk much more better! But this DPM looks interesting!
