Yes, HP servers need active warranties for driver/firmware updates etc. Changed last year I think.

It's why I buy Dell. Not because I want to run kit out of warranty, but because tracking user accounts for entitlement access is a real pain.

. Going off hp because of this, I cannot get a firmware update for an out of warranty system

I think you're celebrating a bit early. Drivers aren't a problem, firmware updates all have (entitlement required) next to them.

You can still get firmares with a bit of googling - our DL380 G5s are all out of warranty but we got firmware updates a couple of weeks ago for BIOS, iLO and the P400s when we were having issues with one of them.

BUT the site is a nightmare at the moment, mainly because google is out of date so none of the links work. Once the split is all fully sorted I hope it will be back to how it was!

FYI, you can still get to the SPP ISOs, you just need to be a bit sneaky bout it:

That's for the Oct '15 one. If you have really old servers, you'll need to find older SPPs. But I agree; I've bought my last HP server for precisely this reason.
