Files are already heavily compressed with codecs thats why you wont get a size difference.

if there already compressed such as .avi's mp3's and things like that its nearly impossible to compress them by much more compression will have a major effect on text document sizes though

I would recommend using 7zip as it tends to do a better job than winzip or rar.
