Wooden sword when fully upgraded becomes one of the most powerful weapons in the game. Takes about 100,000 yellow essence to fully upgrade it.
For fighting make good use of the walls and use block quite a bit (but not too much because enemies can grab you and do some serious damage)
With this game its all about timing your attacks just right wait until they finish their combo, then drop your guard and unleash hell. Also you should have come across the counter attack scroll by now (or you will later depends on difficulty) learn to use it and make good use of it since it lets you attack without taking much or in most cases any damage.
To upgrade your weapons you will need to find one of Muramasa's statues (or his shop in the city) and as you progress through the game you will be able to upgrade your various weapons with the yellow essence you earn.
