take the drive out, and test it via sata/ide using the manufacturer's testing tools

(manufacturer of the drive)

could be a bad usb cable / bad caddy. if it's a bad caddy, then replace it with an icybox 390
 
it's not that much faff really.. 2 mins tops

usb prevents any useful data from being transferred (as in technical data)

what kind of problems are you getting? cutting off when copying files to it? Lacie drives are terrible for this, they have crap cable going to the power section of the drive
 
echoing my first post.

try another usb2 cable
if that fails, then remove the drive & test. if it works fine there, get an icybox 390
