Thumbnails will only take a moment to load the first time, after that they will be stored in the thumbnail cache so will be instant the next time until you manually clear the thumbnail cache from Disk Cleanup.

This issue sounds more like the Disk I/O bug in Security Essentials that has existed since the BETA.

Thumbnail caching may have inadvertantly been switched off. The OP hasn't said whether this slowness shows with thumbnail view and list view.

You can turn the thumbnail cache on and off and see if it makes a difference: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/10794-thumbnail-cache-enable-disable.html

Probably isn't the issue as it isn't usual for Windows 7 to randomly turn off thumbnail caching, but it only takes a moment to check! :)
