I wish I could wow people with my wine knowledge but truth is, I wander into Sainsburys(I find they usually have a better selection) and buy whatever is in budget(generally under £10-£20). Just a case of trying different brands and finding what you like.
 
I like Valpolicella and Chateauneuf-du-pape. You might not though, you're not giving us much.

Go get some taster bottles (make sure you cleanse your pallet in between wines) or just buy a few and try them over a few nights.

Pinot Noir is a nice light red that is ideal for sipping in the garden
Absolutely. Pinot Noir is light and refreshing, and perfect to drink with or without food. 2005 was the last great year for Pinot Noir (French) but New Zealand and the US (California and Oregon) also produce some nice ones for not a lot of money.
