load safe mode and either uninstall the bad drivers or run system restore to roll it back to a good config.

Sounds to me as if the wrong sound drivers have been installed for the on-board audio device or the on-board chip is faulty and crashing when drivers try to access it. Like said above, try a restore in safe mode with F8 or just goto safe mode and remove the sound driver and see if that works.
