I often hear people saying you need to delete your old graphics drivers when you put in a new Gfx card, but if you didnt, what can go wrong, so whats the implications?

Also if i do remove them, is there a specific way to do it or is just a case of going into programs and uninstalling from there?
 
Uninstall drivers, shut down, remove card, put new card in.. boot up, install new drivers.

The biggest problem I ever had was that I once didn't allow windows to detect the card as a vga card first before installing drivers. (In XP).
