'Delidded' CPU's

Hi folks,

A topic in the MM got me curious on this. How fragile are CPU's when the integrated heatsink has been removed? Can you apply a cooler directly to it with enough pressure to not break the CPU but to give good contact?

Anyone done it/doing it? What sort of temps does it give?

We sell a kit for EK waterblocks to allow this. Obviously the core has no protection then but it is possible and works well.

The die itself is pretty fragile. Can you remember the AMD Athlon XP and Durons etc? they all used an exposed die. If you mount the cooler incorrectly you run the risk of cracking it. It's made from silicon which is a form of glass.

The Athlon used to have four foam pads to aid in mounting the cooler evenly.

I used a barton cored amd delidded and it was fine with multiple heatsink resits. Just be careful!

I think you can get a little square foam frame that goes around the chip too. This prevents you from making contact with anything but the chip and takes some of the extra force when fixing the cooler in too hard. Cant remember who does it though

A shim might be a good idea.

I'd be wary - there's quite a difference in mounting a small waterblock vs. mounting a huge chunk of metal.

I would just replace the TIM (with liquid metal) if i was air cooling and put the IHS back on. I can understand wanting to go all out if you spent the cash for watercooling though.
