Delidding a 4670k

Evening folks. I have a friend who's not happy with his 4670k temps and wants me to delid for him using CLU. Whilst I'm very confident in what to do, I'm a little concerned with covering the VRMs in the clear nail varnish - won't this cause them to get too hot ???
 
If any problems arise - how soon will they manifest themselves ?? Will it be an instant problem or will any issue come later in the year if I do something wrong ?
 
If it goes wrong then it will go wrong drastically and you will know straight away. Just don't chip the pcb if using the knife method and don't let the cpu go flying if you use the vice method.
 
I believe it did. There were pictures in a thread on here. I had no gap at all between the IHS and PCB so floss or knife wasn't a option for me. I had to stick it in a vice, cross everything and wince everytime I hit it with a hammer. It took a surprising amount of force to get off actually.
 
Hi there guys sorry for posting this in this thread but I didnt want to start another one as it's related to this one. I got I7 4770k and I want to delid it but this way

That guys uses vice and hair dryer is it possible to delid it that way as it looks too good to be true. Again sorry offitmassive for writing here.
 
Does any body know the temps the nail varnish can withstand ??? I'm worried that it might un set itself with the heat from the die - thinking of using (already in my possession) mx-2 to cover the capacitors prior to using the CLU . As it's not mine , I need to be 100% sure of what I use is gonna be good enough .

Don't be sorry - no need pal !! Fair play though that hair dryer and vice method looks nice !!! I don't have a vice so gonna go the blade way in and slowly wiggle it - rocking the blade like a seesaw almost
 
Loads of people used the nail varnish trick including myself and it works fine. I used the vice method and whacked mine. I followed a tip to put a blanket/padding behind the vice because on the second whack the top came off and the CPU flew out the vice onto the padding.

imho CLU was rubbish. I got better results with mx but some people swear by CLU yet I found it a beeper to remove too.
 
Nail varnish works fine.
There will be NO issues.
It is a tried and tested method for years, long before 4770's appeared.
 
I just used electrical tape on mine, although i only used that cause i did a pretty messy job replacing some of the caps on there, in the past i havent bothered using anything :)

I ve always used the smear application on tim and with clu ya use even less so there no chance you can get clu on it unless you go overboard.

For hte sake of putting a bit of nail vanish on though its not worth risking going without, ill certainly be trying that trick out next time. I know people use to use it to get rid of coil whine.

Nail varnish? This is the first I've heard of it :p I just went carefully with a knife....stabbed myself in the thumb as the lid pipped off but it didn't hit the silicone so happy with a hole in the thumb hehe :p just requires patience.

If I were to do it again I'd probably try vice and dryer with a lot of patience :)
 
All you need is a simple one coat of nail varnish.
Nothing fancy let it dry then apply your clu.
Be sure to remove all traces of the sealant that held the lid on this will ensure your lid sits as close to the core as possible.
My 4770k has been running 2 years & 6 days at 4.8, no issues at all with nail varnish.

When you guys say nail varnish have you used the clear stuff?, as we have plenty of nail varnish here but its all coloured no clear stuff.....i though the clear stuff was actually nail polish not varnish?
