Hey guys

Hoping the community can help me out here. I delivered a gift, a PC case, to a family member for his bday in France. It was a spare case I had from a previous build worth about £200.

I figured if I paid UPS to deliver it for £50 its till cheaper than using amazon or something to deliver it for me after buying it brand new.

I filled out a customs form which UPS told me to do, I marked it as a gift and they (EU government) now want £100 import duty.

Is this accurate? I cant be the only person sending gifts to Europe, should I have used a different product code or something? I couldnt find a customs code for PC cases or accessories so I listed it under 'Electrical Housing' - I thought that was pretty smart haha

Any help will be appreciated.

There is no such thing as an Eu government,

Brexit means Brexit. If you don;t link being outside the world's largest Customs Union then make sure you vote accordingly.

The French government want £100 not the EU for starters, and unless you marked it at being worth £500 theres no way they are asking for £100, it's Vat at 20% here plus a handling fee of €15 ish.

Except he shouldn't be charged for a gift, so nothing to do with Brexit in this case:

Read the OP, the gift wasn't sent form abroad, but form the UK

Gifts can only have a certain value before they will be taxed, something around 40-60euros depending on the country you are sending it to. Anything more valuable than that then you are due VAT, import axes and handling fees, for the entire value of the gift.

First reply mentions Brexit, standard GD.

Never change
Yet, D.P's reply was spot on to blame Brexit, while yours added nothing useful.
Strange that.
Admitably Surveyor's and D.P.'s second post were more useful, but that still doesn't take anything away from the accuracy of D.P.'s first post which is that Brexit has consequences.

Ask for an exact break down of the charges. Also what value did you put on the item? Used item customs values should not be the cost of buying that item new, just a minimum re-sale value, which will reduce the longer you've owned the goods.

19-25% will be VAT.
About £30 will be the courier fee for clearing it through customs.

You need to find out what the other charges are.

There shouldn't be any duty depending on which code it went under.

Thanks. I managed to find some value out of some responses here. Why is this such a touchy subject? I dont care that im being charged to export an item, thats life. I just want to know if me choosing an incorrect export code may have exploded the amount taxed or if that is irrelevant and based on the value I stipulated of the Item which I said was £415 (thermal take 350P with distro plate). Personally I think its worth 200 after the wear and tear.

Think some people need to take a chill pill and answer the question or concern. Sad to see the most irrelevant information comes from someone with circa 30k posts. get a life dude.

Having declared the value as £415 the French import VAT (20%) is £83. Add on the courier admin fee and you can see where £100 comes from.

Ok thats fine and answers my question! Considering this is the first Item i have ever shipped out of the UK I will just pay the fee but what is stopping people saying their gifts are worth £15 pounds when they could be hundreds more? Now before people get triggered and throw the law book around (or blame brexit for some unknown reason), I just want to know the answer to a simple question ... what stops people under stating the value? THE END.

Why declare the value at twice what it's worth?
It retails above £500, I think its worth £200 which is opinion based and the general market would have probably paid £400 plus if i flogged it on ebay. So I went with £415 because i thought if anything did get lost at least I have a fair representation from an insurance perspective.

This thread isn't your personal Quora/Yahoo Answers so you can drop the attitude a touch. But simply put, nothing. It doesn't take a genius to think it is a bit odd that a 5kg package that has cost a reasonable amount to send "only costing £15" is a bit odd though, so you could get caught and then questioned as it is tax evasion.

You'll also only ever be insured up to £15.

Thanks for contributing to my Quora/Yahoo database :) I can only apologise if you think i need to 'drop my attitude', but it seems, based on history spanning a sum total of 1.5 hours, that I need to be very explicit in what I am asking for or else there are many irrelevant posts. Perhaps OC forums is not a community to help people that is fostered on a trust system to help the greater community? If I misunderstood that please do explain it to me. Thanks
