Well I have had a couple try it on now. I simply cannot reach the door within 10 seconds of it ringing. Because I am taking my sweet sweet time they decide to take it upon themselves to open the door.

Now is this acceptable or not? In my opinion it isn't as it is entering my home without permission.

I asked the driver just now why he had done this and he wouldn't admit it! I then asked him for his name and he wouldn't give me it. He then proceeded to ask me for my name. I just shut the door, obviously I already had the parcel and had signed for it at this point.
He stood around for a few minutes and then asked my neighbours for my name, they wouldn't give it him either.
His loud music actually woke up my father who is on night shifts, this prompted him to confront the driver and ask him about the music to which the driver apologised but didn't actually turn down the volume. My father confirmed my surname and the driver just drove off.

I phoned the courier interlink express to log this and they didn't take it seriously at all, I got the standard oh if he didn't actually get in theres no problem. He probably thought it was a porch to which I explained it quite obviously didn't even resemble one. They then told me he had been with them for years and was very reliable but were happy that I contacted them.

Now apart from the drivers conduct I was especially annoyed because the one previous to this actually threatened my mother for not opening the door quickly enough!

So am I going over the top or not?

Yes, he was probably simply going to drop it off inside. Which is better than a quick ring on the door bell followed by a card.

Be thankful he said sorry about the music and the fact he stuck around and attempted to drop your package off even if it was in a odd way.

Occasionally we forget to lock the front door so yes they get in without keys.

I don't think waiting 30 odd seconds for me to get downstairs and open the door is unreasonable.

Yes.

I'm a postman and will try the front door if it looks like there's a porch, otherwise you have go and get your packet from the office. He's probably doing you a favour, but you're too paranoid to realise it.

My postman leaves it at the neighbour if I'm not around. Never tries to open the front door. As I said in my op there is no porch, it would be impossible to mistake it for a porch.

Three minutes. :o

How big is you house?

I'd be off after a minute tbh.

They should make no attempt to open the door. If it is a porch ( not in you case) they can leave the parcel hidden, that's fine. To try and open the door into the house in my opinion as a service engineer who visits private homes, no way. we are told never to open the door unless express permission is given. Although I'm not under as much pressure as a courier, they do have so many get outs it's shocking. Short of fitting a camera to the courier it's your word against there's. You could fit a pir camera looking at your door then you will have proof if you feel they are over stepping there remitt.

Although if it was my house, I'd be glad he dropped it through the door. Thanks courier I was waiting for that parcel.

I would have thought that 3 minutes is quite a long time to expect a delivery driver to wait for someone to answer the door, and I reckon that most would have stuck a card through the door and been on their way much quicker than that!

Ok I didn't time it, I just said 3 minutes because that seemed reasonable to me. Obviously it isn't to some people. But on hearing the door bell I went straight downstairs to the door.

Trouble is everybody did that they'd be working a 24hr day with the amount of stuff they have to deliver, it's all about performance and targets not providing a courteous service.

Your challenge, stand outside holding a pint of milk in one hand, close the front door and count down 180 seconds.

It's a long time mate.

Expecting someone to wait 3 odd minutes for you to answer the door = unreasonable
Someone opening your door without permission = unacceptable

Go and time it now OP so we know exactly how much time we're talking about here.

Edit: An no running. That's cheating.

My postie buggers off after about 30 seconds after ringing the bell. Fair enough too, If I had a van full of parcels I need to deliver I wouldn't want to stand their for more than say 30 seconds -1 minute.

If it was anything like three minutes, then if I was him, I would've been off.
They usually have a massive amount of parcels to deliver, for a pittance each drop. Sounds like he was working FOR you, rather than chucking a card in the door and getting on his way.
