I want to replace my mechanical hard drive for an SSD. I've found plenty of guides on how to physically do this, but how do I then go about installing windows on the new drive?

Currently I have a Windows 8 installed with the free Windows 10 upgrade waiting to be installed. Would I correct in thinking the process would be the following: -

1. Download and install Windows 10
2. Create a bootable W10 install on removeable media
3. Replace the HD in the laptop
4. Reboot and install a clean version of Windows 10

Finally can anyone recommend an SSD that would fit this laptop?

I'd be tempted to save time and just swap the drive, install windows 8, and let it upgrade.

How would I reinstall Windows 8? I'm assuming the install files sit on a partition on the original drive, I'd need to create a bootable version first right?

Why don't you just image the old drive onto the new one (Macrium Reflect would do it)?

Either plug both drives into a desktop PC, or do it on the laptop directly using a USB to SATA adapter cable.
