Hi Guys,

I've been running around in circles the past few weeks looking for a TFT to complement my Dell 17" CRT, perhaps to replace it as a primary monitor for watching movies, surfing, MSN etc, but the CRT will be staying as I do some photo work, and also want two monitors for some things and for flight sim (sad I know :-) )

I had decided between the Dell 1907FP 19"/8ms/300cm../700:1 or the Samsung 940BF 2/ms/300/700:1 though reading rather negative reviews about them, leaning slightly towards the Dell as it was £50 off, more stylish looking and had rotation and height adjustment.

Using the TFT central site, it always suggests the Dell 1905FP during TFT Selector, and I'd only go for Version 2 with the 8ms response time. Are these being sold new anywhere anymore, in the UK?

If not, anyone have suggestions for an alternative? I want 19", 8/ms or faster, and would like something that suits all round purpose. I can understand without spending shed loads, I won't get something top notch for photos but I can live with that and stick with the CRT. Generally Flight Sim will only be around 30frames per second, if that makes any impact on chosing a response time?

Things like height adjust, rotation and USB ports are nice, but not totally neccessary for me so I can live without, but under £250.

Many thanks guys, that conludes Chapter 1 of this novel :)

Dell have discontinued the 1905FP now, but you may be able to find it somewhere online. However, we aren't allowed to link to competitors as per the rules so you'll have to do some searching yourself on that one. The reason the 1905FP is such a good choice is that the 8ms edition uses a P-MVA panel from AU Optronics, which is the same (pretty much) as used in the very popular Viewsonic VP930. This offers much better all round performance than you would get from a TN Film model like the 1907FP or 940BF. TN Film models can suffer from restrictive viewing angles, especialy vertically, noisy movie playback and poor black depth. The 1905FP is a very good all round panel if you get the 8ms edition, but the 20ms version is more of a monitor for static use only, not really for gaming. More info on the two panel versions here, no guarantee which version you would get if you found one, and i doubt anyone can check for you.

given the budget you might really be limited to TN Film panels. The 1907FP and 940BF are both good screens, certainly fine for gaming and general use. They dont offer the all round performance that you could get from a P-MVa model, so if you wanted to get arguably the best all round panel in the 19" market, you might want to consider pushing the budget to about £290 and get the Viewsonic VP930 :) If you are trying to decide between the 1907FP and 940BF, the Samsung is a little more responsive thanks to a heavy application of overdrive technology. However, for your gaming habits, this isn't really needed, and there's probably no need to take the hit in other areas that this technology can give (and does give on the 940BF). The relatively poor control of this overdrive technology on the 940BF can lead to some white halo-ing around moving objects and accentuated noise in movie playback. Given that the 1907FP is cheaper, you prefer the looks more, and has extra features, i think for your needs that would be the better choice of those two.

I have the 1905FP 8ms Ultrabright edition and love it! So much so that I've been looking for another one to go with it :D

Everything is crystal clear. I haven't seen a 1907 in action so I have no basis for comparison. But trust me, you won't be disappointed with the 1905, might save you money too, it being a superceeded model.

Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated.

I read about that issue on the 940BF on here I think yesterday. I've done some more searching for the 1905FP but no joy, lots of links but none for sale.

I shall have a look about the Viewsonic one, thanks for that. 250cm** brightness, how does that fair? Or is it just the 300 ones are direct relations of the Sun and are incredibly bright?

I may well go for the 1907, I'd say I'll be happy enough with it, but if going to spend the money I might as well do it right, right? :D

am I allowed to say awaiting price check on My TFT's before posting in MM again (without being banned)?

what do you mean? Can you elaborate a bit, email me is perhaps the best so we can discuss it off the boards instead of taking this too much OT

Handy thread thanks

Just bid on ebay for a 1905FP, alledgadly 20ms version if I win £85.

I actually cocked up and thought it was the 1907 doh....

So if I win will cost me 85 to find out if its suitable for gaming or not.

if not looks like wifes getting a monitor upgrade for her PC :p
