I was asked by my employer to replace all the 17" Dell CRT`s in the office with 19" TFT`s.

After negotiating with said supplier, i manged to get an acceptable price for the 1908FP in black.

I must say at this point, i have never used a TFT before. Even at home i have a 19" Viewsonic CRT.

The monitors arrived and are superb. Really crisp and look the business.

But.......

All the screens seem to be brighter at the bottom of the screen. The top third is much darker and this causes colour variation. Even whilst i am typing this, the blue background is darker at the top. In fact, the page looks like a gradient fill from top to bottom.

Is this a fault? Other than the brightness/contrast options, is there anything i can do to correct/improve this?

Or am i expecting too much from TFT technology?

When you have stared at a CRT for 15 years, you notice these things ;)

That's caused by the poor vertical viewing angles and is inevitable with TN+Film panels. Unpleasant isn't it  It's why I never buy TN screens. Only thing you could do is return them and buy something with better panels (MVA, PVA or IPS) which don't suffer that problem but they're likely to cost more.

Thanks for the quick reply. I kind of assumed that TBH. As they also do a budget 19" panel, i hoped the 1908 was a better model.

I have done plenty of searching recently, and tried to gen up on the different technologies. Problem is finding what technology is used.

You live and learn. Luckily, the boss loves his. ;)

At least i have now seen one first hand, and what to avoid when i purchase one for myself.

Thanks again.

Best way to tell TN is the viewing angles. 160/160 will always be TN. 178/178 (or anything over 175/175) will be PVA/MVA/IPS. Sometimes TN will be reported as 170/170 when they're being a bit naughty.
