Hi All
First post, please be gentle with me.

I want to replace my ageing 17" Samsung SyncMaster 172W for something a bit bigger.I have been looking at the Dell 20/22in,and reading the comments on here, they get good reviews, however.

Both screens being 1680X1050,the dot pitch of the 20in is 0.25,the 22in is 0.28,so my question is,which screen would give the better picture?

I would love a 24in but I think it would be too big for the deskspace I have.

Graphics card is a BFG7950GT 512Meg.

Just got a couple of new games for the first time in years, but internet and writing music using Sonar are my main interests.

Hope you can help.

Thanks

Alan

Hi Alan, welcome to OcUK :)

First thing to consider here really is the dot pitch, and how you perrrsonally like text. On a 20"WS model, the text will look quite noticeably smaller, but at the same time a litte more readable imo. I personally prefer the "tighter" dot pitch from a 20" model, but the 22" models are still very useable and offer very good PQ still. The other main thing to consider here is the panel technologies used. All the 22" models in the market at the moment use TN Film technology. The Dell 2007WFP however uses (typically) S-IPS panel technology. This offers quite a few advantages over TN Film including much wider viewing angles, better colour depth and compared with it's 22" brother, a slightly improved responsiveness in practice. If you're unfamiliar with panel techs, i'd recommend a read of this this article which will hopefully help you decide :)

Hi Baddass
Thanks for the welcome and the quick reply.

I have read the article you suggested and 20in makes sense.I suppose I thought bigger was better.

Moving up from 17in to 20in is probably a good move,while I can't have a 24in on my desktop,2X20in may be possible,in time.

I run games on my present monitor in 1280X768,how will they look in 1680X1050?Any problems?

Hello, i recently (last week) moved from a 17" to a 20" dell 2007wfp and was also considering a 22", but a samsung.
The PQ on the dell is pin sharp, didn't realise how bad my old monitor was before i got this one. Also the move from TN to S-IPS has blown my mind, i can watch TVs from my bed without having to sit with my head not moving at all and tilting hte monitor down :)

Well worth it :)

no problems Alan. A 20"WS would be a nice step up i think, and the move to S-IPS would be a nice jump up too :) I guess it depends on your graphics card as to whether you can play at the higher res, but i would think you can always turn game details down if need be. if you really needed to you could still play at the same res and either allow the monitor to interpolate the res to full screen, stretching it a bit, or use 1:1 pixel mapping option (on the Dell) to play with black borders round the edge

I am happy to go with the 20in,makes sense, glad I asked the question.

Graphics card should have no problems it's a BFG 7950GT O/C 512Meg.

Just one more question, please explain 1:1 pixel mapping?

Thanks

Alan

Hey Alan, I just got one of the 2007WFP and i cannot recommend it enough. Im a 1337 CSS player so i was slighty worried by the 16ms response time, as i found my 12ms hyundai pretty slow. However the dell is far quicker that the hyundai ever was. Its awesome for gaming, im 100% pleased with it.

Panel quality is excellent, loads of inputs and you have 1:1 pixel mapping if u want to run lower resolutions without stretching the output.

Edit: Say u want to run a game in 1024x768. By default the dell will stretch the output over the whole screen, this changes the aspect ration of the output. It also reduces the quality as you will have say 4 pixels on the monitor representing 1 pixel from the graphics cards output. So you have much reduced quality. With 1:1 pixel mapping 1 pixel from the video cards output is mapped to 1 pixel on the monitor. Therfore u dont use the whole of your screen, however you will preserve quality and aspect ratio.

I notice there are 2 models of the Dell 20in.

The 207 WFP,and the 2007WFP,which I think is the Ultrasharp.

Does it matter which one I go for?

does CSS work in widescreen, i really want to get back into multi player on-line games. I used to be really into Unreal, but then started playing a mod akin to counterstrike and was wondering if its worth getting into CSS or BF2142?

ocuk dont have their own dead pixel policy, you'd either have to contact the manuf if the product fell behind their standards, or use the distance selling act to return the product (see sticky for a bit more info). 1:1 pixel mapping explained here :)

I can vouch for the 20" Dell, lovely screen... I went to from 24" 2405 to the 20" 2007... no regrets!!!
