I just got one of these and its a brilliant monitor lets just say im better at spotting the little things more than others.

The one flaw ive seen and im praying this does not mean i have a faulty monitor. In desktop mode this problem doesnt exist but in media or game mode when looking at the backgroup to this forum i can detect either the backlight or contrast changing every so often i dont know why this is. Its like as if its trying to compensate constantly to improve dark colours or something.

Its hard to spot but u can notice it at close distance to the screen can somebody else check this out for me please. Just turn the monitor to gaming mode then stir at the background to this post and tell me if you spot any changing in colour occurring.

Thx a lot
Fishy

Its not noticable any where else except when looking at a darkish colour like the grayish green one in this post. Oh its an ips panel aswell in vga mode.

Its so hard to spot so im guessing its not that the monitor is faulty its just a feature to keep the colours accurate during movies and games.

just tried this with my new 2007wfp (which arrived today) and i can't notice the effect that you are talking about. Mind you, everything is blue here and now a shade of green in sight

Yeah, if the colour behind these posts is greyish green then there's definitely something wrong, it should be greyish blue :D

sorry yeah grayish blue :) its not that broke i think lol. Its as if the brightness is changing every so often (5 seconds or so) by tiny amounts but bouncing back to where it started. I tried looking at other sites but i cant notice this effect but on these forums i can notice it if i forget to switch back to desktop mode.

Bah if it was faulty why would desktop mode be fine im scared its the start of some major failure :( not sure what i should do if no one else can notice it.

Gonna give dvi ago see if i can see it still....

I tried dvi which gives a different effect seems its just what i said its changing the contrast and brightness depending on the image so that the colours are at their best for movies and games. For some reason though it just doesnt look right in VGA but on DVI say if i swap between two images dark and light you can see the contrast conpensate to keep detail at its max which is only done once for each time i swap image. With VGA it sorta doesnt make its mind up and even with the image not changing i can see it messing with the contrast.

Sorry hard thing to explain not totally sure im right... O_o

Some screens (the NEC and LG 20" offerings) do analyze the current screen and process the image in real-time in an attempt to give a superior contrast ratio. So if you had a screen that was all pretty dark it would brighten it up to bring out the detail or something like that. I didn't know the Dell did it though.

Sounds like you should use the DVI to keep it to a minimum. Does it do it in all the preset modes (desktop, game, multimedia)?

Ive only had it a day but...

Desktop - Never does it no matter what

Multimedia & Gaming - All the time but ive noticed it more when in gaming mode thats just from looking at this forum and cycling two images though you proberly wouldnt even notice it in a game or movie.

Does anyone know what the standard av quality is like on this monitor ive got xbox 360 hooked up to a fatty tv just wondering if it would be an improvement ?

Also noticed certain things in the menu are grayed out like fill mode and sharpness any paticular reason why ?

I wonder what differences there are between desktop and gaming mode apart from brightness/contrast settings. Usually these modes are just effectively short-cuts to specific brightness values. It sounds like on this Dell though the gaming/multimedia modes are enabling some circuitry that isn't used in desktop mode, possibly the overdrive used to made the pannel quicker.

Have you tried gaming in desktop mode and seen if it's any slower?

As for settings greyed out, often some setting are greyed out using DVI because they can be controlled through the drivers using the software that came with the monitor. Some recent Samsung monitor have had no buttons on them at all and all adjustments are made through software.

What is going on in gaming and mulitmedia mode the Faroudja chip is adjusting the contrast and brightness dynamically. That is what you are seeing. You won't see it in desktop mode on a Rev A02 monitor or above as Dell disabled the chip. Reason was it was the cause of the banding, which incidentally you can still see in multimedia and gaming mode if you look at colour gradients (cause the chip is still enabled in these modes).

I see. I wasn't too far off then :)

Is there any drawbacks to simply using the monitor in desktop mode the whole time? I would like to know because I'm considering buying one myself.

I used my 2007 in desktop mode all the time. Other modes were way too bright for me. And you can always adjust the colour and contrast in the video driver anyway.

Yeah I just checked mine in gaming mode and it does what you say, makes my eyes go a bit funny lol. I only use mine in desktop mode though.

Phew :) glad other people noticed it aswell so i guess its good and bad but yeah it does play with yours eyes a bit if your reading text but i guess its good for movies.

I think ill keep it in desktop mode but i guess for dark movie scenes the movie mode proberly shines in that area, still have to give it ago myself :).
